What CPH is like

Kastrup is Denmark's main gateway and a transfer hall for the whole Nordic region, which means a large share of the people walking through it never reach central Copenhagen at all: they carry on across the Øresund bridge into southern Sweden. The airport sits unusually close to the city it serves, and the building is laid out so you can walk from the arrivals hall to a platform without stepping outside. That closeness is what changes the data question here. You need a working line in the first few minutes, not at the end of a long transfer.

Anyone continuing into Sweden should know that the phone will hand over to a Swedish network partway across the bridge, so the plan you bought needs to cover both countries rather than Denmark alone.

There is free Wi-Fi in the terminal, but like most European airports it puts a registration page in front of you first, and that page often refuses to load while the handset is still deciding which network to hold. The more common annoyance is speed in the window when several long-haul flights land together, which is exactly when everyone opens a map and messages whoever is meeting them. Airport Wi-Fi also stops at the door: it does not follow you onto the train platform below the terminal or into the first tunnel section, which is precisely where you want to check a departure. With a line already live, none of that is a decision you have to make.

The obvious way out is the metro from the terminal, which reaches the middle of the city in a short hop and runs through the night. Mainline trains use the same station, and those are the ones that carry on over the bridge to Malmö if Sweden is where you are actually going. Tickets for both are bought in an app on your phone, which is the real reason you want a line working before you reach the platform rather than after. The ride itself is cheap in data terms, a few tens of megabytes for a map, a ticket and a message or two. If you order a car instead, budget a little patience for reading the pick-up signage, since the collection area is not directly outside the arrivals doors.

• Crossing the bridge changes country — If Malmö or Lund is on the itinerary, check that the plan covers Sweden as well as Denmark, because the handset switches networks mid-bridge without asking you first.
• The ticket lives in an app — Buying on the phone is the normal way to travel on both the metro and mainline trains here, so being offline on the platform is a real problem rather than a small inconvenience.
• Transfers that never leave the building — Plenty of people here are only changing planes for Norway or Iceland; if that is you, the plan that matters is the one covering where you land next, not Denmark.
