What this calculator actually computes

The calculator takes three things you type — call type, minutes a day, and number of days — and multiplies them by a fixed assumed rate for that activity. What appears on screen is the output of that formula, not a measurement of how you actually use data.

So if your phone's own data statistics later show a different figure, neither tool is wrong — this one answers 'roughly what should I expect before the trip', while the phone's statistics answer 'what actually happened afterwards'. They are two different questions.

Reading the result so it is actually useful

Treat the figure as a rough ceiling for sizing a plan, not a number that must match exactly. If it lands near the edge between two plan sizes, buy the larger one — the estimate assumes a steady network and a clean call every time, which is not how every day of a trip actually goes.

It also helps to compare this figure against the other activities you enter in the full trip data calculator, since a meeting is rarely the only thing happening that day — maps, social apps and ordinary browsing all run alongside it.

What it cannot know

It does not know how strong the signal is where you happen to be standing, how efficiently your particular app compresses video, or whether your phone automatically drops quality on a weak connection. Every one of those changes real usage, and none of them can be fed into a formula this simple.

It does not know the daily full-speed ceiling written into the plan you hold — that lives on the plan's own spec page — and it does not know whether your handset even supports eSIM, which is a separate check with the device checker. This tool does one narrow job, run entirely from the numbers you type, with nothing else wired in.

  1. 1Pick the closest call typeChoose between audio-only, standard video, or video with screen sharing, since each carries a different assumed rate.
  2. 2Enter the real daily durationEnter how long you actually stay on a call, including waiting-room time and the odd overrun — not the slot booked on the calendar.
  3. 3Enter the days you will actually be on callsCount only the days with a real meeting, not the length of the whole trip — some days may have none at all.
  4. 4Add margin for an unsteady signalIf you expect an unreliable area, add a little on top of the number, since a network that keeps retransmitting uses more data than a steady one for the same call.
  5. 5Check the number against the plan's daily ceilingOpen the spec page of the plan you plan to buy and check whether its daily full-speed ceiling covers the meeting plus everything else you do that day.

Why real usage tends to differ from the number on screen

Conferencing apps do not all compress video the same way. Some drop resolution the moment the signal weakens; others try to hold quality until the call actually fails. That alone means two people on the same length of call, using different apps, can end up with different totals.

Screen sharing behaves the same way — static slides add almost nothing, while sharing video or scrolling fast pushes the total close to high-quality video. This tool uses one average rate for 'screen share' as a category, so it does not separate those cases out for you.

When the signal is weak or you walk in and out of buildings mid-call, the phone resends lost packets, so real usage runs higher than the estimate for the same activity on a steady connection. The tool has no way to know which condition you will meet, so it defaults to the steady case.

How the call types compare

Call typeData behaviour
Audio call onlyThe lightest of the three, in the tens of MB per hour — a sensible fallback when the network is weak
Standard video callNoticeably heavier than audio, since moving pictures travel both ways at once; the exact figure depends on the resolution the app picks for the signal it sees
Video call with screen shareThe heaviest, but with the widest range: static slides barely add anything, while shared video or fast scrolling costs close to high-quality video

Data behaviour by call type

The speed you need against what still works

SpeedWhat still works
About 512 kbpsEnough for chat, maps and email, but a video call will not hold or will drop repeatedly
About 1 to 2 MbpsEnough for low-quality video, but sharing video on screen will stutter
About 3 Mbps and upThe level where an ordinary video call starts holding a steady picture and sound

Speeds you are likely to actually meet

Planning around daily standups

For calls every day of the trip, default the camera off and only turn it on when actually presenting. That cuts data by more than half, consistently, without changing what the meeting covers.

Leave room for days when the signal is worse than usual, since network strength is not identical in every city you pass through — a night in a suburban hotel can be weaker than a night in the centre. Having an audio-only fallback ready in advance keeps a meeting from collapsing mid-call.

The timezone problem people miss

A meeting scheduled around home time can land late at night or before dawn local time. Besides tiredness, that affects data too — at those hours a hotel lobby or public Wi-Fi may be closed, leaving mobile data as the only option with no fallback.

Check every scheduled meeting against local time before leaving, and flag which nights fall late, so you can arrange a place with reliable Wi-Fi in advance rather than relying on mobile data alone.

Network conditions that actually break a call

Riding a high-speed train or an intercity bus makes the phone hop between cell towers far more often than usual, which is exactly when a video call is most likely to drop. Basements, lifts and thick-walled buildings weaken signal in ways that are just as hard to predict in advance.

For a call that genuinely matters, stay in one place for the whole thing, and test the signal for ten minutes beforehand rather than trusting that the plan's full-speed figure guarantees a clean call.

Avoid an important meeting on a fast-moving train or vehicle. Frequent tower handoffs affect how steady the call holds far more than the full-speed figure printed on the plan.

Apps and settings that actually help

Most conferencing apps let you manually turn the video quality down in their own settings menu. It is worth finding that menu before the trip, since some apps default to high quality without asking first.

During an important call, pause automatic photo backup and background app updates. They do not add much to the day's total, but they compete for the speed left over, right when the call needs it most.

  • Test the signal at least ten minutes before the call
  • Pause photo backup and automatic app updates
  • Have an audio-only fallback ready in case the signal is poor
  • Warn the team in advance that you might drop and rejoin
  • Pick a spot with a steady signal, not just one that looks like it has strong bars

When real usage runs ahead of the estimate

If real usage repeatedly beats the estimate, first check whether a background app is competing for data — backup or a system update left running — then reopen the plan's spec page and confirm the daily full-speed ceiling actually matches what you assumed.

If it is still running ahead after that, pair this with the daily budget tool, or top up before an important day rather than waiting until data is nearly gone to deal with it.

The whole calculation runs in your browser on what you type. Nothing you enter is sent to a server, and it is not tied to any account or order.

Turning the estimate into an actual plan choice

Use this figure as one part of the picture, not the single number that decides a purchase. Fold it into what maps, social apps and ordinary browsing use in the full trip calculator, since a meeting is almost never the only thing that day involves.

And when choosing a plan, look at the daily full-speed ceiling first, not just the headline data size — the ceiling is what actually decides whether a video call holds a steady picture on a heavy day.

Khi nào nên liên hệ chúng tôi

If you are unsure before an important call whether your phone and plan will hold steady video, message us on LINE at https://lin.ee/skDPoNx (@esimonline), email esimonline.asia@gmail.com, or phone 089-942-0818 / 088-521-6848, with the phone model and plan involved. We take messages around the clock, every day.

Why the real figure rarely matches the estimate exactly

Video apps raise and lower picture quality continuously as the connection changes, so the same call costs a different amount of data each time. A call made from a room with a strong signal looks sharper and uses more than one made while walking through a station on a wavering connection. The number this calculator gives is a planning range, not a measurement of your own call. The most accurate check is to make one real call and read your phone's own data statistics afterwards.

Planning calls home across a whole trip

If you know you will call home every day, set that data aside as its own block at the start and then see whether what remains covers maps and searching during the day. Planning it that way removes the guesswork at the end of a trip. If you want to stretch the plan further, calling in the evening from accommodation Wi-Fi costs the plan nothing at all and leaves the whole allowance for the hours you spend outside.

Not necessarily. A stuttering picture is usually a speed problem at that moment, not a data-volume problem. Check remaining data separately in your phone's usage screen, and check the plan's daily full-speed ceiling alongside it.
