Kuala Lumpur is both the region's transfer hall and a city people settle into for work. The newer underground stations through the city core work on the platform and while the train is in the tunnel. On the staircase at Batu Caves north of the city you still have service on the steps, though it is a different matter deep inside the chamber, and the cable car up to Genting is unreliable while it hangs above the forest.

A day here comes to roughly 1 to 2GB, because you check rail routes often and call a car whenever the heat makes walking unreasonable. English is widely spoken, so translation apps get far less use than in some neighbouring cities. Scanning to pay is common in shops and car parks but costs little. Anyone here to work, taking calls from a cafe or a co-working floor, will use several times what a sightseer does, since camera time is the variable that matters.

• Chinatown and Merdeka — Old low shophouses and a covered market; the streets are fine, but along the long metal-roofed market aisles the speed is clearly lower than outside.
• Bangsar and Mid Valley — Residential streets and very large malls to the southwest; coverage is consistent, and it is a favourite base for remote workers because it is quieter than the centre.

• Batu Caves — A short commuter train ride north; the coloured staircase and the forecourt behave normally, but inside the chamber under solid rock expect to send nothing until you walk back out.
• Genting Highlands — Drive or ride up the mountain, then take the long cable car to the top; suspended over forest the line is unreliable, and it returns at the summit where the buildings are packed together.
• Melaka — Two hours south by coach on an expressway with service the whole way; the riverside old town is comfortable, while the river cruise passing under low bridges stutters briefly at intervals.
