What Kuala Lumpur is like on a phone

Kuala Lumpur is both the region's transfer hall and a city people settle into for work. Day trips out of the city

• Batu Caves — A short commuter train ride north; the coloured staircase and the forecourt behave normally, but inside the chamber under solid rock expect to send nothing until you walk back out.
• Genting Highlands — Drive or ride up the mountain, then take the long cable car to the top; suspended over forest the line is unreliable, and it returns at the summit where the buildings are packed together.
• Melaka — Two hours south by coach on an expressway with service the whole way; the riverside old town is comfortable, while the river cruise passing under low bridges stutters briefly at intervals.
