Attivazione e scadenza

Attivazione e scadenza

Almost every activation question comes back to the same thing: when the validity clock starts. Get that wrong by a single day and the mistake follows you for the rest of the trip, from data cutting out the night before you fly home to an allowance you paid for and never touched. This page explains the mechanism sitting behind the ten questions below, so that the answers read as one picture rather than ten separate facts to memorise.

Hold one idea from the start: the validity period and the data allowance are two separate clocks. A plan ends when either one runs out, not when both do. Buying more data does not buy more days, and buying more days does not add gigabytes. Those two misreadings are the source of most of the complaints that reach us.

Attivazione e scadenza

Quando parte davvero il conteggio

Most plans sold to travellers begin counting at the first connection to a network at the destination — not at payment, and not at installation. But another group starts from the purchase date instead, and that is a condition each supplier sets rather than an industry rule. So we state the policy on every plan page, and we ask you to read that line before every purchase, even when you have bought something that looked identical before.

The difference has real planning consequences. If a plan counts from the purchase date, buying a fortnight early burns a fortnight of it. If it counts from first connection, you can buy well ahead and install at home without losing anything. So the first question to ask before buying is not the price per gigabyte — it is when this particular clock starts.

Buying, installing and activating are three different events happening at three different times. Buying issues you a profile. Installing writes that profile onto the phone's eSIM chip. Activating is the profile attaching to a live network for the first time. Plenty of people assume installing equals activating and are therefore afraid to install before they leave — when installing early is exactly what we recommend, because installation needs an internet connection, and you have one at home but not yet in the arrivals hall.

The exception to watch is a handset that can reach a supported network on the way — during a layover in a country that happens to be on the plan's covered list, for instance. There, installing can become activating without you deciding to. The prevention is blunt: finish the installation, then leave that profile's data roaming switched off and do not set it as the line used for cellular data until you have arrived.

An activation that has already happened usually cannot be undone. Most suppliers treat a started clock as started, so a request to reset the start date is not something anyone can guarantee. If it happens during a layover, tell us straight away with your order number: we will ask on your behalf under that plan's terms, but we will not promise the outcome in advance.

The sequence below is written for plans that start at first connection, which is the common shape. The aim is to finish everything that needs the internet while you are still at home, leaving one switch to flip on arrival. Menu names differ by manufacturer and by operating system version, so treat the wording here as a description of what to look for rather than text that must match letter for letter.

Attivazione e scadenza

Leggere il saldo residuo dal posto giusto

Every handset keeps its own data counter, and that number almost never matches the plan's real balance. The reason is simple: the built-in counter measures from the last time the statistics were reset, which may have been months ago, and on many phones it adds up traffic from every active line, including the home SIM you left enabled to receive verification codes. The figure to make decisions with is the provider's own, shown on your order page.

There are two moments worth checking. The first is the night after a full day of use, to see whether your real consumption resembles your estimate. The second is midway through the trip, so that a decision about topping up happens while there is still room to act. Waiting until the data is gone is the worst possible time, because topping up usually needs the internet connection you have just run out of.

These two endings are different and deserve different responses. If the data runs out before the expiry date, the connection stops until you top up or buy again. Most travel plans do not bill overage automatically, which is genuinely a good thing: there is no invoice arriving afterwards. If the expiry date arrives first, whatever balance is left goes with it, because validity is tied to dates and not to the remaining gigabytes.

The practical consequence is that oversizing is not the safe default many people assume. Unused data does not roll into the next trip and does not come back as credit. It is usually better to estimate your real usage honestly and pick a plan that supports top-ups, so you can add more at the point where you actually know you need it.

Sintomi comuni legati ad attivazione e scadenza

Ricaricare, estendere o riacquistare

There are three genuine options, and which one is open to you depends on what that plan supports. Plans that allow top-ups usually extend validity along with the new bundle added to the same profile, so nothing new has to be installed. Plans that do not allow it leave one route: buy a fresh profile and install it again, which needs a short burst of internet. That is exactly where people get stuck, because the connection needed for the install is the one that just ended.

Once the clock is running it runs to the end, whether the phone is off, the profile deleted, or the plan untouched for ten days. Validity counts its own calendar days, not days of use. So for a trip in two halves — a week away, a fortnight home, another week away — two shorter plans usually beat one long one that spends the middle stretch running down for nothing.

A travel profile carries a list of countries whose networks it is entitled to use. Land outside that list and the phone simply finds nothing usable — it does not connect and bill you extra, it does not connect at all until you reach a covered country. So the real-world problem is not a runaway bill; it is having planned on connectivity during a stretch where there is none.

The commonest miss is the transit country, especially an overnight layover or one where you leave the terminal. Check the covered list against every place the aircraft stops, not just the final destination. If a stop is not on the list, plan on airport Wi-Fi for that window, or prepare what you need offline beforehand.

Questions about start dates and expiry are far easier to answer before a purchase than after one, because once the clock is running the options only narrow. If you have read the plan page and are still not sure, message us with three things: the plan you are looking at, every country on the route including layovers, and your travel dates. That is enough for us to answer directly rather than trading messages back and forth.

There are three ways to reach us: LINE at https://lin.ee/skDPoNx, email at esimonline.asia@gmail.com, and telephone at 089-942-0818 or 088-521-6848. We take support around the clock, every day; late at night Thailand time a reply can take a little longer. Including your order number in the first message always saves one exchange.

FAQ

Usually not, provided the plan starts at first connection and you keep that profile's data roaming off while you wait. Installing ahead is in fact what we recommend, because the installation itself needs an internet connection. If your plan instead counts from the purchase date, buying long in advance simply spends days for nothing — go back and read the validity line on the plan page before deciding.

How days are counted is set by that plan's supplier, and it is not standard across every plan, so we do not state a fixed cut-off on a supplier's behalf. The reliable move is to read the expiry shown on your own order page — and if your trip lands right on the final day, plan a day of slack rather than arranging for the data to end exactly as your return flight begins.

No. Validity runs on the provider's side, not inside your handset, so deleting the profile saves you nothing and adds risk: most activation codes are single-use, and once deleted the profile may not go back on. If you want to tidy the profile list, delete only the ones belonging to trips that have genuinely finished.

That is mostly the supplier's call, and it is generally difficult: the profile is written to the original handset's chip and the activation code is usually single-use. Do not delete it from the old phone hoping to reinstall elsewhere. Contact us with the order number before doing anything and we will check that plan's terms — but we cannot promise in advance that a transfer is possible.

You can buy ahead, but how far ahead depends on two things: which validity policy the plan uses, and whether it carries a window inside which the profile must be installed, which some suppliers set. The plan page has the detail. If it is not stated clearly, or you read it and remain unsure, ask us first and buy at the safer moment.

Quanto tempo dopo l'attivazione i dati iniziano a funzionare?

Come controllo i dati rimanenti?
