Using an eSIM in Tokyo

A city of ten transfers a day, maps open from dawn, and platforms buried several floors down.

Most people land at Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND). Switch the eSIM line on while the plane is still taxiing, and you normally have service before you reach the immigration hall — useful if a Visit Japan Web screen still needs loading. From Narita the Skyliner and the Narita Express spend their first stretch crossing open Chiba farmland, where the line can hiccup briefly before locking solid once the built-up area starts. From Haneda the run into town is mostly under the surface and usually stays usable all the way to Shinagawa or Hamamatsucho.

What Tokyo is like on a phone

Tokyo pulls in first-timers, repeat visitors who come back every year, and people flying in for three working days. All of them hit the same thing: several rail companies layered on top of each other, so the phone gets asked which platform, which exit, which carriage, all day long. Inside the loop the network is dense and continuous, tunnels included, so the honest experience is not a dead zone but a brief sluggishness when a whole rush-hour platform reaches for its phone at once.

When you land

Most people land at Narita (NRT) or Haneda (HND). Switch the eSIM line on while the plane is still taxiing, and you normally have service before you reach the immigration hall — useful if a Visit Japan Web screen still needs loading. From Narita the Skyliner and the Narita Express spend their first stretch crossing open Chiba farmland, where the line can hiccup briefly before locking solid once the built-up area starts. From Haneda the run into town is mostly under the surface and usually stays usable all the way to Shinagawa or Hamamatsucho.

Where coverage changes

Inside the loop the line barely drops: deep platforms and the long transfer corridors under Otemachi or Shinjuku stay usable. What people actually notice is throughput sagging around six in the evening at the biggest interchanges, when tens of thousands of handsets wake up together. The bayside — Odaiba, Toyosu, the reclaimed blocks with sky in every direction — is comfortable. Ride west instead, out past the Tama suburbs towards the Okutama hills, and the line starts thinning in valley-shaped patches.

What a day here costs in data

An ordinary Tokyo day runs about 1–2GB: the map never really closes, departure times get re-checked at every transfer, and queue or reservation apps open while you stand in line. Film the neon streets and upload before bed and three gigabytes a day arrives quickly. If one person in a group tethers everyone else, multiply by the number of handsets leaning on that line. Camera-based menu translation adds only a little each time, but you will do it at every meal.

Districts travellers ask about

  • Shinjuku — The station has a notorious number of exits stacked over several floors; the line works throughout, but indoor maps often guess the wrong level, so read the signage alongside the screen.
  • Shibuya — The crossing at dusk is as crowded as the network gets in this city, and speeds dip with it; send a meeting pin or book a car before you walk down into the scramble, not while standing in it.
  • Asakusa — The temple lanes and old arcades behave normally day to day, but festival crowds pack in hard; save any ticket or QR to the device before you step into the press of people.
  • Ginza — Department stores run several basements deep and connect underground; the line holds but the lowest floors answer slower, so open any voucher or membership screen before you take the lift down.

Day trips out of the city

  • Hakone — The mountain railway hands over to ropeways, and the line strengthens and fades with the valley walls — noticeably so where the cabin floats over the sulphur field. Download the timetable before you leave Odawara rather than reading it mid-air.
  • Nikko — The train through Tochigi keeps a solid line, but the bus up the hairpins to Lake Chuzenji loses it in stretches until the lakeside village comes back into view. Screenshot the return bus times before you climb.
  • Kamakura — The Enoden trundles between houses and along the shoreline with the line intact the whole way; it is the weekend beach crowd, not the terrain, that slows a photo upload here.

Questions

Getting online in Tokyo

Do I need to change anything when transferring between different rail companies?+

No. The eSIM attaches to a mobile network, not to any rail operator, so it behaves the same on every line. What actually helps is letting your navigation app read your location, because wrong-floor exits get people lost far more often than signal does.

Should I leave the line on overnight if jet lag wakes me at five?+

You can. Background use with the screen off is small once automatic photo sync is switched to Wi-Fi only, and leaving it on means the first train times load the moment you wake instead of waiting for the line to re-register. If you are watching the allowance closely, restrict photo backup to the hotel Wi-Fi.

Tokyo has plenty of free Wi-Fi — do I still need an eSIM?+

Free hotspots exist, but most want a fresh sign-in at every venue and drop the second you walk out of the door. The moments you most need a connection are the ones spent walking between two station exits, which is exactly where hotspots do not follow you. Your own data line keeps the map from freezing halfway.

What should I prepare before a big Tokyo event like a concert or a festival?+

Save the e-ticket or QR to the device before you go in, because tens of thousands of people in one field slow everything at the same time. Event dates and entry conditions change from year to year, so take them from the organiser's own announcement. Agree a physical meeting point with your group as a fallback.
