How many eSIM profiles can a phone hold?

Frequent travellers accumulate profiles until the phone says it is full. The confusion is that there are two numbers: how many can be stored, and how many can be active simultaneously. They are not the same.

The two different numbers

• Stored profiles: everything held on the device, including disabled ones
• Active profiles: those attached to a network at once, usually far fewer
• Both vary by model and operating system version

What one profile actually is

An eSIM profile is not a file sitting in ordinary storage the way a photo is. It is a set of operator credentials written into a dedicated secure chip, which is built to hold a limited amount of data and to resist being read from the outside. That is why profile capacity has nothing to do with how much free space the phone reports. A device with tens of gigabytes free can still refuse to take another profile, and the two numbers are unrelated.

Once that is clear, the warning message reads differently. It is not telling you to delete photos or uninstall apps; it is telling you the secure element is full. The only way to make room is to remove a profile that is already there, which is a decision worth making deliberately rather than in a hurry at an airport.

Why we do not publish a number per model

Three things stop a single number from being true. Hardware differs even between models released in the same year. Operating system updates can change how profiles are managed. And profiles are not all the same size — different providers write different amounts of data into the chip, so how many fit depends partly on whose profiles you are holding. A figure that was accurate for one phone last year can be wrong for the same phone after an update.

Stored, active, and the physical slot

There are more than two numbers in play once a phone still has a card tray. A device that supports both a physical SIM and eSIM has a limit on how many lines run at the same time, and the card in the tray counts towards it. The table below separates the terms, because the messages phones display rarely distinguish them clearly.

Take an inventory before you decide anything

Most people do not know how many profiles they have until the phone complains, and by then they are deleting in a hurry. Take stock first. It costs a few minutes and it makes every decision afterwards obvious rather than nervous.

6. 6Delete one at a time, then retryAfter removing one, retry the installation immediately. If it succeeds you do not need to remove anything else.

Disable, delete, or leave alone

The three options are not interchangeable. Disabling suspends a profile while it stays on the chip and continues to occupy a slot. Deleting removes it from the chip, which frees the slot but usually cannot be undone. Leaving it alone is perfectly reasonable while you are under the limit and might return to that destination. The mistake is treating disable and delete as the same thing because they sit next to each other in the menu.

Do expired profiles still take up room?

Generally yes. The slot was taken at installation, not at activation, so an expired plan keeps occupying space until it is removed. That makes expired profiles the first candidates when the chip is full. How they are presented differs though: some phones list expired profiles separately, others mix them in with working ones, and the label a phone uses for a finished plan is not standard across manufacturers.

When installation fails but the phone is not full

Failure messages during installation look much alike whatever caused them, and a full chip is only one of the possibilities. Others include a QR code that was already used, Wi-Fi dropping mid-download, a carrier-locked handset, or an OS that has not been updated in a long time. Work out which one you are looking at before you start deleting things you may want back.

• Retry on a more stable Wi-Fi network rather than repeating on the same one
• Check whether the device is on a current OS version
• Confirm whether that QR code has already been used once
• Check that the handset is not carrier-locked
• On a company-managed device, ask IT whether policy permits adding a profile
• Note the exact wording of the message before contacting support

Clear the space before you buy, not after

The painful order is buying first and discovering afterwards that nothing will install, especially when you bought at an airport with a boarding call already announced. Reverse it: open the plan list before you pay. If there is room, buy. If there is not, clear one slot first and then buy, which turns a stressful ten minutes into a routine one.

Moving to a new phone

Profiles do not necessarily travel with a normal backup. Some recent devices offer a transfer tool that moves a profile between handsets, but whether it works depends on the phones, the OS versions, and the provider behind that particular profile — some do not support transfer at all. Check before you wipe the old device, because a profile erased from a phone that has already been reset is rarely recoverable.

If a travel plan still has allowance and you are changing phones, ask the seller first whether it can be moved and how. The answer varies by provider, so there is no single procedure that applies to every plan.

Watches, tablets and other devices

Each device has its own secure chip and its own limit. A cellular watch typically stores far fewer profiles than a phone and is often tied to the paired phone's line rather than holding an independent travel plan. A tablet keeps its own separate list, so clearing space on the phone does nothing for it. When you plan to give a tablet its own data abroad, check that device's capacity on that device.

Company-managed devices

A device under company management may be configured to block adding or removing profiles entirely, regardless of how much room the chip has. That is a policy restriction, not a capacity one. If the menu is greyed out or nothing happens when you tap it, ask IT before you spend time deleting profiles to make space that was never the problem.

A QR code you have not used takes no space

A profile only occupies a slot once it has been installed. A QR code or an activation reference sitting in your mailbox uses nothing on the chip. That means you can buy ahead of a trip without clearing space first, but the clearing still has to happen before the moment you install, which is usually the moment you least want to be making decisions about what to delete.

Keep the purchase confirmation until the profile is installed and working. If installation fails, the details in that email are the first thing any support conversation will need.
