Guatemala calls itself the land of eternal spring, which is true of the highlands around Antigua and Lake Atitlán, where altitude keeps the days warm and the nights cool almost year-round. What actually changes is water. The dry season from about November to April gives clear skies and enough visibility to see the whole line of volcanic cones; the wet season from roughly May to October brings an afternoon downpour most days and a low cloud base that hides the summits. The Petén lowlands, where Tikal stands, are considerably hotter and more humid than the highlands in every month. Altitude, not latitude, is what you are really packing for.

• November tot januari — Many regulars call this the best stretch: the rain has just finished, the landscape is still green from it, and the sky is clearing. It is when Fuego smoking above Antigua is at its most visible. Highland nights, and especially the overnight camp on the Acatenango hike, are far colder than most visitors pack for, so a real sleeping bag and a proper jacket matter. Around Christmas and New Year domestic travel is heavy and rooms at Lake Atitlán tighten up.
• Februari tot april — Deep dry season and the driest ground of the year: trails are firm and the dirt roads to the villages around Atitlán behave. The trade is dust and agricultural burning in some areas, which can haze the air for stretches, particularly in March and April. Easter week in Antigua is the country's biggest event and moves between March and April from one year to the next, so check that year's calendar and book a very long way ahead, or deliberately stay elsewhere that week.
• Mei tot juni — The rain returns, but in a form you can plan around: mostly late afternoon into the evening, with the mornings usually open. The landscape turns from brown to green inside a few weeks. Visitor numbers drop noticeably once Easter has passed, and rooms in Antigua and Panajachel soften. If a volcano climb is on the list, start before first light so you are at the top before the cloud builds, because by mid-morning the view often closes in.
• Juli tot augustus — Mid wet season, though it contains what locals call the canícula, a break in the rains that usually falls somewhere in late July or early August and is not reliable every year. These are the months when Antigua fills with people studying Spanish, so the town is lively and its schools and cafes are busy. Lake Atitlán is at its greenest and fullest. Tikal, by contrast, is humid enough that the mosquitoes become a genuine part of the planning.
• September tot oktober — The two wettest months of the year. Landslides and temporary closures on mountain roads genuinely happen, especially on the narrow highland routes, so allow far more travel time between towns than any app suggests. The compensation is the emptiest, cheapest weeks of the year and the cloud forest around Cobán and Semuc Champey at its most spectacular with the water high. Accept that you will rarely see a volcano summit in either month.

November to January gives the best balance: the rain has stopped but the country has not yet dried to brown, the sky is clear enough to see the volcano line, and the highland air is at its most comfortable. If the goal is the Acatenango climb or watching Fuego erupt after dark, the first two months of that window usually give the cleanest visibility. For anyone who wants low prices and few people without committing to heavy rain, May and June are a sound middle path, because the mornings stay usable almost every day.

September and October bring the heaviest rain and the highest chance of a mountain road closed by a landslide. You can still go, and the prices are excellent, but the trade is a flexible schedule and accepting that the volcanoes will spend most of the time inside cloud. Easter week in Antigua is the most beautiful thing in the Guatemalan year and also the most crowded: rates multiply and rooms go a year out. If you are not there specifically for the processions, that week will slow everything down. March and April can also carry haze from agricultural burning in some years, which quietly takes the edge off the views.

Terrain shapes coverage here far more than the season does. The villages around Lake Atitlán sit under high cliffs, and in some of them the signal exists only in certain corners of the village, while crossing the lake by boat means a stretch mid-water where it drops out entirely. What the wet season changes is how the day gets planned: an afternoon downpour sends people back indoors, and they spend longer online checking which roads are open and rerouting around them. That road information circulates through local chat groups and pages more than through official notices, which means you have to be online to have it at all. An overnight volcano hike is its own case, because the cold at the summit camp drains a battery unusually fast, so carry a power bank and sleep with the phone inside the bag.
