One country, but you can cross seasons in a single day: in late March you might eat outside in Nice while, a few hours away, the Alps are still in the middle of their ski season. The north and Paris behave like the rest of western Europe, with rain possible in any month and very short winter days, while the south is dry and genuinely hot through July and August. What sets France apart from its neighbours is the national habit of taking one long holiday at the same time, which changes the face of entire cities in August. Choosing when to come is really choosing which of these three countries you want.

• December tot maart — This is the Alpine and Pyrenean ski season, with the deepest reliable snow up high usually falling between February and early March. Paris in the same weeks goes dark early and stays damp, but the museums are quieter than at any other time and the queues at the famous ones visibly shorten. The south is not cold, yet many restaurants and hotels in the seaside towns close for their own off-season break. Check whether a coastal town you like is actually open before committing to it.
• April tot half juni — The window that repeat visitors keep choosing. Paris parks and the Loire châteaux are fully open, the air is right for walking all day without hunting for shade, and the southern coast warms up even if the sea is still bracing for a long swim. The Provençal fields have not yet reached their lavender weeks, which come later in the summer. Rail and room prices sit below the midsummer level and the light is already long in the evening.
• Half juni tot juli — Full summer, but before the national holiday rush. The lavender fields of Provence usually hit their best weeks during July, the beaches fill without yet being impossible, and outdoor festivals and concerts come thick and fast — look up the year's calendar, because the dates shift. Cities are hot in the afternoon and the sensible rhythm is an early start, a long lunch and a late evening. Trains sell out earlier than people expect once school finishes.
• Augustus — The month when the country swaps places with itself. Large numbers of Parisians leave, and neighbourhood restaurants and bakeries shut for weeks at a time, while the southern coast and Corsica are as full as they ever get. The main roads heading south jam badly on the changeover weekends at the start of the month. Afternoon heat in the south is strong enough that walking in open sun is a poor idea; locals move their day to either side of it.
• September tot november — September is the honest answer for most travellers: the southern sea still holds its summer warmth, the cities reopen in full, and the crowds thin noticeably after the first week. October brings the grape harvest through Burgundy and Bordeaux, with the vineyards at their most photogenic and the tasting rooms busy with real work. November turns grey and wet enough that the plan should move indoors, towards food, galleries and covered markets. Room rates fall steadily across these three months.

For a trip that mixes cities with countryside, May into early June and the month of September are the two windows that deliver everything at once: walkable weather all day, everything open, and no competition with the entire nation for a restaurant table. If you are coming to ski, aim at February into early March, when the snow up high is usually at its deepest. If the Mediterranean is the whole point, September gives warmer water than June along with beaches you can breathe on. Avoid pinning a first visit to Paris on August, when a good share of the neighbourhood places you came to try are shuttered.

The first two weeks of August are the ones people most regret if the plan is city-based: neighbourhood restaurants are closed for their annual break, the roads south crawl, and coastal rooms are both full and at their tightest rates of the year. November into early December disappoints anyone hoping for postcard countryside, because grey skies and short days leave very few usable photography hours. In the mountain villages there is a third trap — the weeks from late April to June, when the lifts have shut but the hiking trails are not open yet, and the resort sits half-asleep with little to do. None of these ruins a trip, but each one takes away the specific thing most people came for.

The season changes how data gets used here more than people expect. During ski weeks a phone drains fast in cold air on an exposed chairlift, and high on the mountain the signal is usually solid around the lift stations rather than along the whole run, so agree a meeting point in advance instead of trying to type one at the moment you need it. In summer the problem inverts: on the Riviera beaches and in the small southern old towns, tens of thousands of people are packed into a few square kilometres, and speeds sag in the early evening when everyone uploads the day's photos at once. High-speed trains alternate between tunnels and open farmland, so the connection comes and goes — download tickets and maps for offline use before boarding. In August, mountain and coastal roads also reroute around closures and events, and a live map matters more than a printed plan.
