Days are long and warm spells do happen, but they are spells, not a guarantee. If you want the classic seaside week, this is when it works; if you want quiet, it is not.
• September tot oktober — People who come back to Britain a second time often pick these weeks. Children are back at school, the cities return to their working rhythm, and September still holds enough daylight for a full day out. By October the parks and woods turn, and the hills of Scotland and Wales go rust-coloured in a way photographs never quite catch. Rain becomes more frequent and the wind picks up towards the end of October, which is the price of having the place half to yourself.
• November tot februari — This is a season for towns rather than for hills: daylight is too short for a serious walk, but museums, West End theatre, pubs with a fire going and the December markets give the period a character of its own. Snow in the big cities is uncommon and usually melts within a day or two, while the Scottish highlands run small ski areas that open in the years when enough snow falls. Storms roll in off the Atlantic and can disrupt ferries and rural trains for a day at a time. Book indoor things and treat any bright afternoon as a bonus.

September in particular rewards a second-time visitor who already knows the famous sights and wants the country at working pace.

Neither period is a mistake — winter cities are genuinely good and August has the festivals — but both trade flexibility for the things you came to see.
