Canada opens and closes with the seasons more literally than most countries: roads, trails, boats and a good many small-town businesses run from roughly late June to early September and then shut until the next summer. Winter is not a dead period, it simply changes the product to skiing, northern lights and cities built to be walked in snow. Between the two poles sit a spring that turns the melt into mud and a short autumn that many people consider the best weeks of the year. The gap between the milder, wetter Pacific coast and the deep cold of the prairies and Quebec means a Canadian winter does not mean the same thing in two places.

• December tot februari — Full winter. Whistler and Banff move into ski season, while Quebec City and Ottawa turn into snow cities that are genuinely pleasant to walk. Yellowknife and Whitehorse become aurora bases because the nights are long and the sky is often clear. On the prairies the temperature can drop a very long way for a week at a time, which is why the clothing that works here is layers rather than one thick coat. Daylight is short, so plan two things a day, not four.
• Maart tot april — The least predictable stretch of the Canadian year. Plenty of ski areas stay open into April on softer spring snow, while the eastern cities turn to mud and meltwater. The maple sugar season in Quebec and Ontario normally falls somewhere in March into early April depending on how the freeze and thaw run that year, so check the season's dates locally. Vancouver gets its blossom before anywhere else. Room rates are usually at their softest of the year in these weeks.
• Mei tot juni — Spring arrives for real and the days lengthen fast, especially up north. Low-elevation trails open first while ridge routes in the Rockies can hold snow into late June. The drawback nobody warns you about is the bugs: black flies and mosquitoes in the northern forests are usually at their thickest in these weeks, so proper repellent is not optional. Crowds stay thin until the last week of June, which makes early June one of the better-kept secrets of the Canadian year.
• Juli tot augustus — The two months when everything is open at once: the Rockies lakes are at full turquoise, whale boats run daily off British Columbia and Newfoundland, and the outdoor festival calendar in Montreal and Calgary is packed into this window. The consequence is that car parks in Banff and Jasper fill early in the morning and lodging is normally booked months ahead. Wildfire smoke can settle over parts of the west for stretches of days in some summers. Book first, improvise later.
• September tot november — September is the month a lot of regulars quietly consider the best: still warm enough, noticeably emptier, and the insects are gone. The leaf colour in Quebec and Ontario normally peaks in the first half of October, with the west turning later and more briefly. By November much of the seasonal infrastructure has closed to wait for snow, which makes it the quietest and cheapest month and also the one with the least to do. Treat November as a city-and-museum month rather than a landscape one.

For most visitors September is the safest answer: the parks are still open, the air is comfortable to walk in, the school-holiday crowd has gone and the northern bugs are finished for the year. If you need every boat trip and every high trail genuinely open, take mid-July to mid-August and accept that you must book a long way ahead. If snow is the whole point, mid-January to early March is when the base is usually deepest and the nights are still long enough for aurora hunting. Early June is the value pick if you can tolerate mosquitoes.

November gives the least back: not enough snow for skiing, the colour already gone, and a long list of seasonal operators shut. If landscape is the reason you came, that month can feel hollow. April in the east has a related problem, because the melt turns trails to mud and everything outdoors is wet underfoot. Mid-July to August in Banff and Jasper is not a weather problem at all, but the trade is queueing traffic inside the park and accommodation you had to secure the previous winter.

Canada has a lot of land and not many people, so the network follows the main highways and the towns, and drops out for long stretches once you leave both. A drive across the Rockies or around Newfoundland deserves the whole route downloaded as offline maps before you set off. Winter is the real enemy of battery: a phone held in cold air on a chairlift, or out on a frozen lake waiting for the aurora at one in the morning, loses charge far faster than you expect, so keep it in an inside pocket and carry a warm power bank. Night-mode aurora photography and uploading those clips from a northern lodge eat more data than people plan for, because the files are large and small-town connections are slower than you are used to.
