Afghanistan eSIM
Afghanistan has no traveller eSIM service available, and we do not list a plan for it. The people who go are aid organisation staff, journalists, and a small number of travellers moving with a local operator that handles the visa, the permissions needed to travel between provinces, and communications on the ground. Something else to plan around is that connectivity can be restricted or cut for periods in some areas. What follows is travel context only, not advice on buying a plan that does not exist here.

Whatever you use depends on the line your local organiser arranges, and it stays light in practice — messages and a few photos a day — because the legs that cross the mountains have no service anyway.

The main gateway is Kabul International (KBL), served mostly from Dubai, Islamabad and Istanbul, with three other operating airports at Mazar-i-Sharif (MZR), Kandahar (KDH) and Herat (HEA). Overland there are crossings at Torkham and Spin Boldak into Pakistan, Islam Qala into Iran, and Hairatan into Uzbekistan, all of which open and close according to the situation at the time.

The network follows the cities and the ring road linking Kabul, Kandahar, Herat and Mazar-i-Sharif. The high mountains have very little: the passes through the Hindu Kush, parts of the route up to Bamiyan and the Band-e-Amir lakes, and above all the Wakhan Corridor in the far north-east, which is genuinely remote. Groups travelling in those areas normally carry their own satellite equipment rather than relying on a phone network.

- Kandahar — Major southern city on the main ring road.

Can I travel around Afghanistan independently?+
In practice it is very difficult. Visas normally go through a local organiser, travel between provinces usually needs permission papers, and there are checkpoints along the way. Many governments still advise against all travel to the country. Before you consider it, read your own government's current advice in full and check in writing whether your travel insurance covers you there at all, because many policies exclude it outright.
How reliable is staying in contact inside Afghanistan?+
Plan on being reachable in windows rather than continuously. Cities generally work, but on mountain roads and in remote districts you can go quiet for hours, and service is sometimes restricted or suspended in particular areas. Keep maps and key documents saved offline on the device, and agree with people at home in advance which part of each day you will check in, so that silence is not read as an emergency.
