Around 500MB–1GB a day is often enough, since most travellers only use maps, messaging and search. If you need video calls or want to upload a lot of photos, allow closer to 1.5GB a day.

The main international airports are Yangon (RGN), Mandalay (MDL) and Nay Pyi Taw (NYT). The land crossings with Thailand that travellers use are Mae Sot–Myawaddy, Mae Sai–Tachileik and Ranong–Kawthaung, but these open and close unpredictably, so confirm the current status before every trip.

What should I prepare before leaving the main cities?+
Download offline maps for every town on your route, save your accommodation address in Burmese as an image, carry enough cash, and tell someone at home your route and expected arrival time. Road legs between towns can leave you out of contact for several hours at a stretch.
Do power cuts affect the mobile signal?+
They do. When the power is off for a long time, local network equipment runs only as long as its backup lasts. Many guesthouses have a generator, but it runs on a schedule. Carry a fully charged power bank and top your phone up whenever the power is on rather than waiting until the battery is low.
Where can I check whether a route is safe?+
Rely on the travel advisories published by your foreign ministry and embassy, because conditions vary between states and can change quickly. Read the current version before you book and again before you leave, and register your trip with your embassy if a channel exists for it.
