Around 500MB–1GB a day is often enough, since most travellers only use maps, messaging and search. If you need video calls or want to upload a lot of photos, allow closer to 1.5GB a day.
The main international airports are Yangon (RGN), Mandalay (MDL) and Nay Pyi Taw (NYT). The land crossings with Thailand that travellers use are Mae Sot–Myawaddy, Mae Sai–Tachileik and Ranong–Kawthaung, but these open and close unpredictably, so confirm the current status before every trip.
Yangon and Mandalay are usable across the city. Bagan and Inle Lake work well enough around the towns and guesthouse areas, but the hill country in Shan and Chin states, and the long road stretches between towns, drop out for extended periods. Frequent power cuts can also take local network equipment offline.
- Yangon: Usable across the city, though speeds vary through the day.
- Mandalay: Adequate in town, thinner on the outskirts and along the river.
- Bagan: Fine in the guesthouse areas; uncertain out among the temples.
- Inle Lake: Workable in Nyaungshwe; usually nothing out on the lake.
- Ngapali: Passable at the beach resorts; keep an offline map anyway.

Is the internet in Myanmar usable as normal?+
Not in the way its neighbours are. Access to some services is restricted, and connectivity has been suspended in certain areas at certain times. Do not plan work that depends on being online continuously: keep documents, maps and contact details saved offline, and read the latest travel advice before you set off.
What should I prepare before leaving the main cities?+
Download offline maps for every town on your route, save your accommodation address in Burmese as an image, carry enough cash, and tell someone at home your route and expected arrival time. Road legs between towns can leave you out of contact for several hours at a stretch.
Do power cuts affect the mobile signal?+
They do. When the power is off for a long time, local network equipment runs only as long as its backup lasts. Many guesthouses have a generator, but it runs on a schedule. Carry a fully charged power bank and top your phone up whenever the power is on rather than waiting until the battery is low.
Where can I check whether a route is safe?+
Rely on the travel advisories published by your foreign ministry and embassy, because conditions vary between states and can change quickly. Read the current version before you book and again before you leave, and register your trip with your embassy if a channel exists for it.
