What HND is like

Haneda is Tokyo's original airport and still handles an enormous volume of domestic flying, with international services layered on later until it became the obvious choice for anyone who wants to be in the city quickly. Its advantage is distance rather than scale: the run from the terminal to the central wards is far shorter than from Narita. What catches people out is the overnight arrival that lands before the transport network has properly started its morning. That gap is the thing worth planning for.

A lot of Haneda's international traffic lands in the small hours, so the immigration queue is either surprisingly short or surprisingly long depending on how many aircraft arrived together. Get the line up on landing and check two things straight away: when the first train of that morning runs, and what time your accommodation will actually let you in. Those two answers decide whether you are about to sit in a hall for a while. The international terminal connects directly to two rail systems from its own basement levels, so you never have to step outside to reach them. If you land before service starts, most people wait in the terminal rather than cross the city by taxi at three in the morning.

The free Wi-Fi covers the main halls reasonably well but still puts a terms page in front of you, as at every Japanese airport. Between roughly three and five in the morning, when a lot of passengers are stuck in the building with nowhere to go, it slows down because everyone is online at once. More to the point, it cannot follow you down to the underground platforms, and the platform is exactly where you need the timetable. A line of your own that is live from touchdown is worth more here than at most airports.

Arrivare in città

Two rail routes carry most people out: a monorail that connects to the central loop line, and a train that runs north toward the Shinagawa side. Both are quick compared with the trip from Narita, and both start from the basement of the terminal. Fares are tapped with a card or a phone, and setting that up for the first time needs data. Taxis run through the night but sit in a completely different bracket from the train, which makes them a solution for arriving outside service hours rather than a default. Signal comes and goes in the underground sections, so load your route before you take the escalator down.

• Check the first train before you deplane — On an overnight arrival the answer reshapes the whole night, and it is much easier to look up while the network is quiet than when the hall fills with people asking the same thing.
• Set up transit payment while still upstairs — Adding a transit card to a phone needs data the first time, and doing it in a hall with good signal beats standing confused at a ticket gate underground.
• Close does not always mean quick — Haneda really is close to town, but landing before service starts means the time you saved gets spent sitting in the terminal anyway.
