What NRT is like

Narita sits in Chiba prefecture rather than inside Tokyo itself, and it was built from the start to absorb long-haul traffic. Most people walking out of it have just finished a long flight and still have a serious journey left. The terminals are distinctly separate, and the one used by low-cost carriers involves a longer covered walk than newcomers expect. The hardest stretch of the day is usually after customs, not before it.

Japan has moved most of the entry and customs paperwork onto a phone screen, so the first thing your line is asked to do is load that page rather than fetch messages. If the handset is still stuck in airplane mode, toggle it once before you join the queue, because the queue is a bad place to start troubleshooting. The walk from a far gate to the passport hall takes several minutes and is a good window to confirm you really have bars. Do not count on finishing anything important between the counter and the baggage belt.

Japanese airport Wi-Fi is free and does not push you toward buying anything, but you still pass through a terms screen in a browser first, and that page often does not pop up by itself on a handset fresh out of airplane mode. The real limitation is that it stops existing the moment you walk out of the building. Install and activate an eSIM before you leave home so that none of this is on the critical path while you are standing in a hall with your bags.

The run into central Tokyo takes about an hour on an express train, with one service heading for Tokyo Station and another toward the Ueno side, and buses that go straight to central hotel districts as a third option. Seat reservations and working out which train stops where are now almost entirely app or web tasks, so you need a live line while you are standing on the platform, not after you board. The route alternates between tunnels and open farmland, and short signal drops along it are normal and fix themselves. One trip in costs very little data unless you stream the whole way. Budget instead for the maps and sign translation you will open far more often than usual on a first day.
