Keflavík is how nearly everyone enters Iceland, and it sits out on the Reykjanes peninsula among open lava fields rather than on the edge of the capital. Getting to Reykjavík is a genuine drive of roughly three quarters of an hour, not a suburban hop. Most people arriving here intend to keep driving, whether that means the full ring road or just the waterfalls along the south coast, and that is why preparing for data here is unlike any ordinary European airport. Anyone landing in the small hours should know the first stretch of road is properly dark, with very little beside it to navigate by.

Free Wi-Fi in the terminal works and is usually quick enough for ordinary tasks, with the familiar registration page in the way. The most congested window is the early morning, when transatlantic flights arrive together, which is exactly when everyone wants to download a map and check road conditions at the same time. The important point is what comes after: leave the building and there is no public network to fall back on for a long while, because the road crosses lava fields with no houses on them. Wi-Fi at a fuel stop or a cafe is something you occasionally encounter, not something you can plan around.

A day driving the ring road is another matter entirely: the map runs for hours on end and you will refresh road conditions and wind forecasts several times over. Along the main routes there is service almost throughout, but the interior highlands and parts of the western fjords drop out for long stretches, leaving you on whatever you downloaded.
