  • From Tokyo, take the shinkansen to Takasaki, the JR Joetsu Line to Shibukawa, then a Kanto Bus up to Ikaho; allow roughly two and a half to three hours.
  • From Osaka or Kyoto it is not a sensible day trip; break the journey in Tokyo or Takasaki.
  • A rental car suits groups and heavy luggage, but the mountain road is winding and can be icy in winter. Check fares and timetables with the operators.

Ikaho Onsen is a hot-spring town built up a hillside on the slopes of Mt Haruna in Shibukawa, Gunma Prefecture. It has no railway station of its own, so almost every visitor reaches it the same way: a train to Shibukawa, then a bus up the mountain. From central Tokyo the whole trip is usually in the region of two and a half to three hours each way, depending on connections. That makes it realistic as a long day trip, though an overnight stay lets you walk the stone-step street and use the baths at a relaxed pace.

The fastest route at a glance

  1. 1Tokyo to TakasakiTake a Joetsu or Hokuriku line shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno to Takasaki. This leg takes roughly an hour.
  2. 2Takasaki to ShibukawaChange to a local train on the JR Joetsu Line toward Shibukawa, roughly 20 to 30 minutes.
  3. 3Shibukawa to Ikaho OnsenBoard a Kanto Bus at the stop outside the station. The ride takes about 30 to 40 minutes on a winding mountain road.

From Tokyo

The shinkansen, local train and bus combination is the most predictable option, because shinkansen services to Takasaki run frequently and seats can be reserved in advance. At certain times a limited express runs from the Tokyo area through to Shibukawa without a change at Takasaki, but it does not operate every day or every season, so check with JR East. A long-distance bus from Tokyo toward the Ikaho area may also run in some seasons; confirm that one exists for your travel month.

At Shibukawa, look for the bus stop outside the station for services to Ikaho Onsen. The bus calls at several stops in the town, and the terminus is near the upper part of it. If your lodging is near the lower end of the stone steps, check a map or ask the driver which stop to use, so that you do not haul luggage up the slope.

From Osaka and Kyoto

The Tokaido Shinkansen from Shin-Osaka to Tokyo takes roughly two and a half hours, and a little less from Kyoto. Add another two and a half to three hours to reach Ikaho and the total is too long for a single day. Most people fold Gunma into a Tokyo stay, sleeping in Tokyo or Takasaki and travelling on in the morning, which also leaves time for a proper soak.

From the airports and nearby cities

Both Haneda and Narita require a trip into Tokyo or Ueno first, after which you follow the same route. The ride into the city from Haneda is shorter than from Narita. If your flight lands in the evening, spend the first night in Tokyo, since the last buses up the hill can be earlier than expected. Other Gunma cities such as Maebashi lie on the same Joetsu Line, so a stop on the way is easy.

If you drive, the usual route is the Kan-Etsu Expressway to the exit near Shibukawa-Ikaho, followed by a short climb. From Tokyo it takes roughly two hours or more depending on traffic. Parking in the town is limited and some lodgings charge for it separately, so ask when you book.

Passes and tickets

The conditions and prices of the national JR Pass change over time, so do not work from old figures. For this trip a regional JR East pass such as the JR Tokyo Wide Pass covers many lines in Gunma, but check whether your stations are inside the area and whether the bus up to Ikaho is included. For a single round trip, ordinary tickets may well be cheaper than any pass, so compare using your own route. IC cards such as Suica work on JR trains and many buses, but not all, so keep some coins handy.

Luggage and booking

  • Coin lockers at Shibukawa are limited, so send large bags ahead by takkyubin courier from your Tokyo hotel, or leave them there and carry a small pack up the hill.
  • On long holidays and in the autumn colours, buses up the hill can be crowded with little room for luggage. Allow extra time and avoid the last departures.
  • Some lodgings offer a pick-up from Shibukawa Station by arrangement; ask when you book.
  • Reserve shinkansen seats ahead in busy holiday periods so that you are not left standing.

A mobile connection matters most at the Shibukawa transfer, where a timetable app, a map and a translation app all help. An eSIM installed before you leave works as soon as you land, with no need to hunt for a SIM at the airport.

Fares, timetables, bus departures and pass conditions change. Before you travel, check them with JR East, the bus operator, or the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel.

الأسئلة الشائعة

الأسئلة الشائعة

Can I visit Ikaho Onsen as a day trip from Tokyo?+

Yes, but travel alone eats roughly five to six hours. If you want a proper soak and a walk up the stone steps, one night is far more comfortable.

How many changes are there?+

Usually two: at Takasaki and at Shibukawa. At certain times a limited express skips the Takasaki change; check the timetable.

Can I use a JR Pass?+

For JR trains it depends on which pass you hold. Whether the Kanto Bus is covered must be checked. Conditions change, so confirm with the operators.

Can I drive up to Ikaho in winter?+

Often yes, but the mountain road can be icy or snowy. Ask the rental company about winter tyres or chains and check the forecast before setting out.

Do I need mobile data on the way?+

Not essential, but very helpful, especially for checking bus times and maps at the Shibukawa transfer. Installing an eSIM before you fly is the easiest way.
