How to Get to Eiheiji from Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto

Kurz erklärt

  • The main route is the shinkansen to Fukui Station, then a bus or the Echizen Railway plus a bus to the temple.
  • From Tokyo Fukui is about three hours; from Kyoto or Osaka you usually change at Tsuruga.
  • A rental car helps if you plan several stops, but snow season demands extra care.

Getting to Eiheiji is not complicated once you see that every route converges on Fukui Station, from which you take a bus or a local train to the temple. The common mistake is planning too tight a schedule, assuming the temple is beside a station. In reality you need to allow for waiting and transfers.

The fastest route im Überblick

  1. Travel to Fukui Station by Hokuriku Shinkansen, or via Tsuruga.
  2. At Fukui Station, board a bus heading directly to the temple or change to the Echizen Railway.
  3. If you took the train, get off at Eiheiji-guchi Station and take a short bus ride up to the temple.

Travel from Fukui Station to the temple generally takes from a few tens of minutes up to a little over half an hour, depending on whether you take the direct bus or change to the train. Buses are not very frequent, so check the timetable with the operator and leave room for the return.

From Tokyo

From Tokyo take the Hokuriku Shinkansen from Tokyo or Ueno Station, through Nagano, Toyama and Kanazawa to Fukui. It takes roughly three hours or a little more, depending on how many stops the train makes; services with fewer stops are quicker and easier. Check the timetable with JR.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka and Kyoto take a JR limited express to Tsuruga, which is in Fukui Prefecture, then change to the Hokuriku Shinkansen for Fukui and carry on to the temple. The change at Tsuruga is straightforward but allow enough time, since a missed connection means waiting for the next train.

From airports and nearby cities

Fukui Prefecture has no large international airport. Visitors who fly in usually use Komatsu Airport in Ishikawa Prefecture near Kanazawa, or enter via Tokyo or Osaka and continue by rail. From Kanazawa the shinkansen reaches Fukui, and from Tsuruga or other towns in the prefecture you change to local lines or the shinkansen for Fukui.

If you sleep in Fukui, go up to the temple in mid-morning and return before dark, especially in winter when the sun sets early. If you carry on by shinkansen the same day, leave at least half an hour of slack between the return bus and your booked train, and avoid locking in a non-changeable shinkansen ticket before you know the real bus times.

One more point that people overlook is how to pay on local trains and buses. Some lines accept IC stored-value cards while others still take only cash and coins, so carry spare cash and small change and check on the operator's site which payment methods are accepted.

Passes and tickets

A nationwide or regional JR pass may cover the shinkansen and some lines on this route, but the scope of each pass and the trains it covers change over time and do not include everything, for example the Echizen Railway or some bus lines. Check coverage with the operator before buying. Sometimes single tickets work out better than a pass, especially on short itineraries.

Luggage and reservations

Leave a big suitcase in a station locker or at your hotel in Fukui before heading up, because the temple has stairs and requires shoes off. Most shinkansen trains offer reserved and unreserved seats; reserve on busy days such as long holidays and the autumn colour season, and keep your tickets until you exit at the destination.

A route with several changes makes staying online important for maps, bus timetables and translating Japanese signs at small stations. Installing an eSIM before you fly means it works the moment you reach Japan.

Timetables, fares, pass coverage and reservation rules can change. Check with JR, the local rail and bus operators, the temple's website and the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel before you travel.
