Getting to Ise from Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka

Kurz erklärt

  • From Nagoya and Osaka, Kintetsu runs straight to Iseshi or Ujiyamada.
  • From Tokyo, take the shinkansen to Nagoya first, then a connecting train.
  • Fares, timetables and pass conditions can change; verify with operators before buying.

Ise lies in Mie Prefecture on the eastern side of the Kii Peninsula and is not on the shinkansen line. Travel therefore means reaching a major city first, then taking a Kintetsu or JR train to Iseshi or Ujiyamada station. The starting points Thai travellers use most are Nagoya and Osaka. This guide covers the main routes and how to choose.

Getting to Ise from Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka

The quick summary

  • From Nagoya: Kintetsu limited express or JR Rapid Mie, roughly an hour and a half
  • From Osaka: Kintetsu limited express from Osaka Namba, roughly two hours
  • From Tokyo: shinkansen to Nagoya in about an hour and forty minutes, then a connecting train

From Tokyo

From Tokyo or Shinagawa, take the Tokaido Shinkansen to Nagoya, which takes roughly an hour and forty minutes. At Nagoya, change to a Kintetsu or JR platform for Iseshi, the one station served by both companies. The total is about three to three and a half hours depending on the connection. This suits a stay of at least one night, but a same-day round trip from Tokyo is not ideal because total travel time is long.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka, take Kintetsu from Osaka Namba or Osaka Uehommachi to Iseshi. Some services are reserved-seat limited expresses taking roughly two hours, and local trains take longer. From Kyoto there is no direct service as convenient as from Osaka; you typically change at a Kintetsu station or reroute via Nagoya, for a total of roughly three hours. Check routing on an app or the operator's site.

From airports and nearby cities

From Chubu Centrair Airport near Nagoya, take the Meitetsu line to Nagoya Station, then Kintetsu or JR to Iseshi. From Kansai Airport you must go into Osaka and take Kintetsu from Namba. From Tokyo's Haneda or Narita, head for Tokyo Station as described above. Nearby towns include Toba and Shima, which connect to Iseshi via the Kintetsu lines and the JR Sangu Line.

Train vs bus vs rental car

OptionStärkeWeakness
KintetsuDirect from Nagoya and Osaka, comfortableNot a JR line, so not covered by the JR Pass
JR Rapid MieUsable with a JR Pass and direct from NagoyaNot very frequent and slower than limited expresses
Long-distance busCan be economical on some routesRoutes and frequency change; verify
Rental carHandy for Toba and ShimaParking near the shrines is limited, and expressways carry tolls

For Ise and Toba alone you do not need a car, but if you have several people and want to explore deep into the Shima peninsula, a rental car can pay off. You need a licence valid in Japan as set by the authorities and must drive on the left.

Passes and tickets

The JR Pass covers JR trains such as the Rapid Mie and the JR Sangu Line but not Kintetsu, the main route to Ise, so you must work out whether it pays off across the whole trip, and avoid old prices because prices and conditions can change. Kintetsu offers passes for certain kinds of visitors that cover the Ise-Shima area and some routes from Osaka or Nagoya, but conditions, validity and prices must be checked on Kintetsu's own site. IC cards such as ICOCA or Suica work on local lines, though limited-express tickets usually require a supplement.

Luggage and reservations

Ise does not have as many lockers as the large stations, so store luggage at Iseshi Station or your hotel before heading to the shrines. Some Kintetsu limited expresses have reserved seats and luggage space. Around New Year and festivals, the bus from Geku to Naiku can mean a long wait, so allow extra time and check timetables in advance.

With several connections, being able to check live timetables is a big help, and a Japan eSIM lets you use navigation apps from the moment you land.

Timetables, fares, pass conditions and bus routes can change. Check with the railway and bus operators directly, and with the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel, before you travel.
