What The Algarve is like on a phone

The Algarve is not one town but a long coast of old centres, fishing villages, large resorts and sandbar islands you reach by boat. Visitors include families on long summer stays, golfers, and northern Europeans escaping winter. In the main towns and resort areas the connection is good; the difference shows the moment you drop down to a beach beneath the cliffs, go into a sea cave, or take a boat out to one of the lagoon islands.

When you land

Almost everyone comes through Faro (FAO), a mid-sized airport that gets very busy in summer, with buses and taxis to towns along the coast and a regional railway linking them from Lagos across to Vila Real. Switch the eSIM on in the terminal, because most people need to pick up a hire car or reach their host straight away. Driving out along the coastal motorway the connection is fairly continuous; the small roads that branch down to the beaches are where it thins.

Where coverage changes

The main towns — Faro, Lagos, Albufeira — are well served throughout. A beach beneath high cliffs picks up noticeably less than the car park above it, because the cliff blocks the direction the signal comes from. Inside the sea caves you reach by boat there is essentially nothing. Out to the sandbar islands of the Ria Formosa the connection weakens while the boat crosses open water and comes back to something usable once you land. On a full summer beach the sharing of bandwidth is obvious through the busiest afternoons.

What a day here costs in data

Algarve days vary wildly by activity. A day on the sand costs little, because the phone stays in a bag. A day driving between beaches means hours of turn-by-turn navigation and adds up faster than people expect, on top of booking boat tours, checking the swell forecast and uploading cliff photos. Ordinary sightseeing lands around a gigabyte a day; families whose children watch video in the car should budget clearly above that.

• Lagos — A walled old town beside a run of sculpted cove beaches; in town it is fine, but the coves you reach by steps under the cliff hold far less than the top.
• Albufeira — The big resort strip and the densest place on the coast in summer; evening speeds follow the crowd in the nightlife quarter, so leave long uploads until you are back at your room.
• Tavira — A quiet river town from which a boat takes you over to its sand island; the town itself is good, the island workable but not the equal of the mainland.
• Ria Formosa and the Faro island beaches — A shallow lagoon strung with sandbar islands; the connection dips while the boat crosses the open water, so check your return sailing before you leave the quay.

Day trips out of the city

• Sagres and Cape St Vincent — The far south-western headland, windswept and open to the Atlantic; up on the cliffs there is nothing in the way and it holds well, though the road across the heath on the way out has weaker stretches.
• The Benagil caves by boat — Small boats run along the cliffs into the rock chambers; inside there is next to nothing, and it also weakens whenever the boat pulls away from the shore. Agree the return time with the operator before you board.
• The Monchique hills — Winding roads climb into wooded hills away from the coast, with gaps especially down in the folds; download the map and note the destination address before you leave the shore.
