China eSIM for 15 days: a multi-city loop, how much data

Fifteen days looks like the best match for the 15-day pack, but that pack holds 3 GB while a real multi-city trip uses about 16 GB. This is the length where the validity and the size do not go together.

China eSIM for 15 days: a multi-city loop, how much data

Quick answer

  • Our 15-day China pack is only 3 GB, below even the 7 GB light estimate for this trip. Look at a 20 GB pack valid for 30 days, or buy two 10 GB packs, one per half of the trip.
  • A trip this long usually touches small towns or mountains where signal varies. Do not let data hit zero mid-trip, because buying another plan needs a connection of its own.

How much data 15 days in China takes

Level of useRoughly per dayTotal for 15 days
Light: maps, chat, email0.4GB7GB
Normal: social, photos, short video0.9GB16GB
Heavy: streaming, video calls, hotspot1.9GB33GB

Daily use times the days, plus 15 percent for app updates and photo backup. An estimate, not a measurement of your phone.

Fifteen days: a loop that is more than the headline cities

Fifteen days opens up a bigger loop: Beijing, Xi'an and Chengdu, then a flight to Guilin or Yangshuo, and a last hop to Shanghai to fly home. Or take the Yunnan route through Kunming, Dali and Lijiang, which is small-town and highland country. What differs from ten days is that you will spend time in places where public Wi-Fi is poor and rely more on your own data.

  • Small-town stretches like Yangshuo, Dali and Lijiang have shops and guesthouses with Wi-Fi of uneven quality, so your data becomes the backup.
  • Big-city stretches in Beijing and Shanghai are heavy on ride-hailing and scan-pay, with data spiking on transfer days.
  • Multi-night rests, such as three nights in Yangshuo, bring data down a lot because you sit in cafes.

The 15-day trap: the name and the size do not match

Among China-only plans, the 15-day one is only 3 GB (offered on China Mobile and on China Unicom or China Telecom), below the 7 GB light estimate for fifteen days, let alone the 16 GB for normal use. Someone who buys it because the 15 days match the trip may run out before the halfway point.

A better fit is 20 GB valid for 30 days, which clears the 16 GB normal figure by a little and leaves the other 14 days as surplus. You can also split it into two 10 GB packs and install the second at the halfway point. The upside is that you can pick different networks; the downside is remembering to swap eSIMs.

If you are heavy and near the 33 GB estimate, look at 50 GB valid for 30 days or two 20 GB packs. Never let the balance hit zero somewhere with no Wi-Fi, because you will not be able to buy a new plan.

Daily plans versus a big block over fifteen days

At fifteen days, daily plans are rarely the best value for steady users, since you pay fifteen times and may exceed a single 20 GB pack. Daily plans suit stretches of the trip though: 5 GB for a transfer day, 1 GB for a day in lodging with good Wi-Fi, or as a top-up when the big block runs low. Compare the totals in the table before deciding.

Network and apps on a longer trip

Our China plans exit abroad, as the China eSIM guide explains, so Google, LINE and Instagram usually open, but there is no guarantee, and the longer the trip the more chances one place gives trouble. Two packs on different networks is another way to spread the risk: for example China Mobile for the first half and China Unicom or China Telecom for the second.

One long-trip issue is setting up Alipay or WeChat Pay at home. Small shops in lesser cities often accept scan only, and if the linked card has a limit you can get stuck midway. Top up and check your card limit before you fly, and keep a small amount of Chinese cash for when an app misbehaves.

Our plans are data only, with no voice or SMS. Fifteen days is long enough for a Thai bank to send an OTP when you buy something, so keep your main SIM live.
