🇬🇱 Greenland

Greenland eSIM

Greenland has no roads between towns, so every leg of the trip is a plane, a helicopter or a coastal boat, and all three answer to the weather and the ice rather than to a printed timetable. A working line is what tells you early whether tomorrow's flight is still going, whether the next night's room needs moving, and whether the boat operator has replied yet. In Nuuk or Ilulissat day-to-day use feels like any small Nordic town, but the moment you leave the settlement you should assume you are offline until buildings appear again.

Before you buy for Greenland

Every Greenland eSIM here is 4G at most; none has 5G. A 5G phone works fine, it simply connects on 4G.

What happens when your GB runs out

A GB plan is a fixed amount of data. When it is used up, data on that eSIM stops and nothing is charged automatically, but you can top up the same eSIM without a new QR code, and check what is left any time from your order page.

A mock-up of the data remaining screen, with made-up numbers; the real page shows your own plan. The big number is what is left, the ring shows the share already used, Refresh pulls the latest figure, and below 20% a Running low tag appears with a Top up button for the same eSIM.

How to check your data and top up

How much data you actually need

About 500MB–1.5GB a day while you are in town, covering maps, weather, emails with the airline and iceberg photos. On boat or hiking days you will often use almost nothing, simply because there is no service out there to use.

When you land

The main gateways are Nuuk (GOH) for the capital, Kangerlussuaq (SFJ), long the hub for onward domestic flights, Ilulissat (JAV) for Disko Bay, Narsarsuaq (UAK) in the south and Kulusuk (KUS) on the east coast. The other way in is by sea, with cruise ships and coastal vessels calling at the west-coast towns. Switch the line on inside the terminal, because changes to onward domestic flights usually arrive by email or SMS.

Where coverage changes

Service here follows the settlements. Nuuk, Sisimiut, Ilulissat and the coastal villages work normally, but between them there is simply nothing: the inland ice, the deep fjords and the Arctic Circle Trail from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut have effectively no coverage from end to end. Coastal boats fade in and out depending on how far they are from a town. Anyone spending days outside a settlement should rely on the operator's satellite communicator instead of a phone.

Cities travellers ask about

  • Nuuk — The capital and largest town, with the best service and shops.
  • Ilulissat — Base for the icefjord; fine in town, patchy once on the water.
  • Sisimiut — The finish point of the Arctic Circle Trail.
  • Kangerlussuaq — A transfer point and the gateway to the inland ice.
  • Tasiilaq — The main east-coast town, where onward travel is pure weather luck.

Apps to install before you fly

  • Air Greenland for domestic flights and delay notices
  • Windy or Yr, because the whole itinerary hangs on the weather
  • Guide to Greenland for booking boat and ice tours
  • An offline map such as Organic Maps with routes saved first

FAQ

Does a Denmark or EU plan work in Greenland?+

Generally no. Greenland is a self-governing part of the Kingdom of Denmark but sits outside the European Union, so it is not inside the EU roaming rules and is usually its own coverage area. Check the country list on the plan page and look for Greenland by name. If Greenland is not there, do not assume a Europe bundle quietly includes it, because that is the most common way people arrive without a working line.

Is there any signal on the Arctic Circle Trail?+

Plan as if there is none. The route from Kangerlussuaq to Sisimiut takes roughly a week through uninhabited country, and phone service only returns as you close in on the far end. People who walk it carry a satellite messenger for emergencies, leave their walking plan with someone before setting off, and load the maps and GPS tracks onto the phone while still in town with data.

How often do domestic flights slip, and how much buffer do I need?+

Weather rewrites plans in every season: fog, wind and poor visibility push domestic flights and helicopter legs around routinely. Experienced travellers leave one to two spare days before an international departure and never book a same-day connection onto it. Turn on the airline's notifications and check the status early in the morning, because the decision to fly or not is often taken only a few hours before departure.

Should I leave the line on when I head out of town?+

With no network to attach to, the phone keeps searching and drains far faster than usual. The common approach is to switch to flight mode while you are out on a fjord or on the trail, then bring the line back up when you re-enter a settlement. Cold makes the battery fall away quicker still, so keep a power bank in an inside pocket where it stays warm and download everything you need before leaving town.

When does a Greenland eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
