How much data you actually need
Whatever data you end up using depends on the local line your operator arranges. In practice it is light — messages and a few photos a day — because the desert legs of a trip have no service anyway.
When you land
The operating gateways are Mitiga in Tripoli (MJI), Benina in Benghazi (BEN) and Misrata (MRA); the old Tripoli International (TIP) was damaged and is not in normal service. Some travellers come overland from Tunisia or Egypt, where the process depends on the situation on the day and on what the tour operator has arranged.
Where coverage changes
Population and network both hug the Mediterranean coast from Tripoli through Misrata and Sirte to Benghazi. The interior — the Fezzan, the Ubari sand sea, the Akakus mountains — is Sahara with effectively nothing, which is why desert trips run on the expedition's own satellite equipment rather than on a phone.

Almost entirely through the licensed tour company, which typically arranges a local line for the group and carries satellite equipment for the desert sections. Contact with home tends to happen in bursts whenever the group is back in a coastal town, so agree in advance how many days of silence each leg of the trip will involve.
Can I travel to Libya independently?+
In practice it is very hard. Visas normally require a sponsor or a licensed tour company to file on your behalf, and many governments still advise against travel to the country or to large parts of it. Before planning anything, read your own government's current travel advice and check carefully what your travel insurance will and will not cover there.
When does a Libya eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
