How much data you actually need
About 800MB–1.5GB a day for maps, ticket bookings and photos. If you upload video from Cusco and the Sacred Valley each night, budget 2–3GB a day.
When you land
The main gateway is Lima's Jorge Chavez (LIM). Common domestic destinations are Cusco (CUZ), Arequipa (AQP), Iquitos (IQT), Juliaca (JUL) for Puno and Lake Titicaca, and Puerto Maldonado (PEM) for the Amazon. Travellers coming from Bolivia usually cross at Desaguadero on the lakeshore, where having data speeds up onward transport.
Where coverage changes
Lima, Cusco and Arequipa are well covered, and the Sacred Valley works along the main road. What genuinely has nothing is the Inca Trail and the Salkantay route, which spend days on high ridges, parts of the Colca Canyon, the Amazon once you leave Iquitos or Puerto Maldonado, and the high passes between Andean towns where the road climbs above the last antenna.

How far ahead must I book Machu Picchu tickets?+
Entry is capped per time slot and the high season fills quickly, so book ahead and match your train times to the slot you get. The system and its rules are adjusted from time to time, so check the official channel before planning, and keep the confirmation file on your phone in case service in Aguas Calientes is patchy.
Can I stay reachable on the four-day Inca Trail?+
Mostly no — the route runs along high ridges and over passes with no base stations. Tell your family in advance that you will be silent for four days, keep the map and emergency contacts saved on the device, and leave your details with the trekking company, which has its own communication channels on the trail.
Does the altitude affect how the phone works?+
Altitude itself does not weaken the signal, but high areas have fewer base stations, so the phone searches more often and the battery goes faster. Cold makes that worse. Carry a power bank and switch the phone to airplane mode in areas you already know have no service, rather than letting it hunt all day.
When does a Peru eSIM start counting days?+
Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.
Do I have to remove my home SIM?+
No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.
