How much data you actually need
Around 1–2GB a day, since government apps, maps and ride-hailing all get opened repeatedly. If you film at AlUla or stream back home, add roughly another gigabyte a day.
When you land
The main gateways are Jeddah (JED), Riyadh (RUH), Dammam (DMM) and Madinah (MED), the last being the one most Umrah travellers use. AlUla has its own airport (ULH) for domestic flights, and by land the King Fahd Causeway comes in from Bahrain. Turn the line on as you land, because immigration steps and several permits are shown from an app.
Where coverage changes
Riyadh, Jeddah, Dammam, Makkah and Madinah are densely covered, and the Haramain high-speed line holds service along most of its route. It thins markedly in the Empty Quarter, on the long intercity stretches with no settlement, in the valleys and escarpments of the Asir mountains near Abha, and out in the desert rock country around AlUla away from the main road.
