Somalia eSIM

Somalia has no traveller eSIM service available today, and we do not list a plan for it. The people who go are mostly staff of international organisations, regional business travellers and Somalis returning home, and they move under security arrangements with a local line arranged for them rather than one they buy online. It is also worth knowing that Somaliland in the north runs its own visa and entry process, separate from arriving through Mogadishu. What follows is travel context only, not advice on buying a plan that does not exist here.

How much data you actually need

Whatever you use depends on the line your organisation or local host arranges. In practice it stays light — messages, email and a few internet calls a day — because movement in the cities is time-limited anyway.

When you land

The main gateway is Aden Adde International in Mogadishu (MGQ). In the north, Egal International at Hargeisa (HGA) is the way into Somaliland, and there are also airports at Bosaso (BSA), Garowe (GGR) and Berbera (BBO). Most flights connect through Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai or Istanbul. Land crossings from Ethiopia and Kenya exist, but whether they are usable depends entirely on the security situation at the time.

Where coverage changes

The network clusters in the coastal and trading cities — Mogadishu, Hargeisa, Berbera, Bosaso and Garowe. The interior is wide semi-desert rangeland, and the western borderlands, the valleys between the southern towns and the long inter-regional roads have effectively nothing to hold on to. That is one reason travel between cities is usually done on domestic flights rather than by driving.

Cities travellers ask about

  • MogadishuIndian Ocean capital where movement is limited by security arrangements.
  • HargeisaSomaliland's main city, with its own entry procedure.
  • BerberaGulf of Aden port town, extremely hot in summer.
  • BosasoNorthern trading port in the Puntland region.
  • GarowePuntland's administrative centre, midway along the north-south route.

Apps to install before you fly

  • WhatsApp, the channel local contacts use most
  • An offline map app such as OsmAnd, downloaded before travelling
  • Google Translate with offline Arabic and Somali packs

FAQ

Can I buy an eSIM for Somalia from you?+

Not at the moment. We do not list a plan for Somalia, because traveller roaming there is not normally available, and this page exists as travel context only. If you would like us to tell you should that change, message us on LINE at https://lin.ee/skDPoNx or email esimonline.asia@gmail.com and we will keep the request on file.

Is Somaliland a separate trip from the rest of Somalia?+

In practice they are separate. Somaliland issues its own visa and runs its own immigration control at Hargeisa, so a Somali visa issued through Mogadishu is not interchangeable with it. Travelling outside Hargeisa to outlying areas normally requires an armed escort under local rules. Check the current requirements with a local organiser before you plan anything, because the procedure changes with the situation.

What should I prepare before travelling to Somalia?+

Start with your own government's current travel advice, because many still advise against travel to the country or to large parts of it. Confirm in writing whether your travel insurance actually covers the areas you will be in. Keep maps and key documents saved offline on the device, and agree with people at home in advance which windows of the day you will check in, since the connection is rarely continuous from morning to night.

When does a Somalia eSIM start counting days?+

Most plans here start when the phone first connects to a network at the destination, so you can install in advance at home and switch it on after landing. Each plan page states its own rule.

Do I have to remove my home SIM?+

No. The eSIM is a second line, so you keep your home number for SMS OTP. Turn off roaming data on the home line and set the eSIM as the data line.

Plan data in this build comes from a demo supplier used to exercise the system. Prices and networks are replaced with live data once a supplier API is connected.
