Planning a Scotland trip from Thailand: Edinburgh, the Highlands, Skye and the journey from London
One UK visa covers Scotland. Best months, LNER trains, the Caledonian Sleeper, the Edinburgh Visitor Levy and where mobile signal drops.

Quick answer
- A trip to Scotland needs no separate visa, because Scotland is part of the United Kingdom; Thai visitors use the same Standard Visitor visa as for England.
- LNER trains from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley take roughly 4 to 4.5 hours, and the Caledonian Sleeper runs overnight from London Euston.
- Mobile signal is good in the cities but has gaps in the Highlands and on the islands, so download offline maps before you set off.
A trip to Scotland needs no separate visa, because Scotland is part of the United Kingdom. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) issues one Standard Visitor visa that covers England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. Most Thai visitors fly into London, then go north by train or plane to Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Do you need a visa for Scotland, and where can you enter?
Thailand is on the UK visa national list published by the Home Office, so Thai passport holders need a Standard Visitor visa before travelling to Scotland, as for England, and there is no visa on arrival. Use the gov.uk visa checker to confirm your own case.
- You can fly via London or a European hub to Edinburgh (EDI), Glasgow (GLA), Inverness (INV) or Aberdeen (ABZ).
- Thai passport holders cannot use ePassport gates and must queue for a Border Force officer at the first UK airport.
- The same visa lets you move between England and Scotland with no passport check at the border.

Which month is best for Scotland?
Summer from June to August has the longest daylight and mild weather, but the biggest crowds. Spring and early autumn are good shoulder seasons. Winter days are short, with dusk falling in mid-afternoon in Scotland, and it is cold and wet. Pack a waterproof layer in every season.
| Season | Strengths | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| June–August | Long daylight, easy for driving and hiking | Crowds and fast-filling rooms |
| Spring and early autumn | Fewer crowds, comfortable weather | Changeable weather, bring waterproofs |
| Winter | Atmospheric cities and festive events | Short days and tricky Highland roads |

How do you get from London to Scotland?
LNER trains from London King's Cross to Edinburgh Waverley take about 4 to 4.5 hours, with the fastest around 4 hours 10 minutes. The Caledonian Sleeper leaves London Euston overnight: the Lowlander serves Edinburgh and Glasgow, and the Highlander serves Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William. It runs most nights except Saturday, so check the timetable. Flights are the other option.
| Option | Best for | Check |
|---|---|---|
| LNER day train | Coastal views, arrives in the city centre | Timetables and weekend engineering works |
| Caledonian Sleeper | Saves daylight, links to the Highlands | Not on Saturday nights, book ahead |
| Domestic flight | Travellers short on time | Airport time and baggage rules |

Which to visit first: Edinburgh, Glasgow or the Highlands?
Most first trips start in Edinburgh because the old town is easy to cover on foot. Glasgow offers museums, live music and food, and is a short train ride away. The Highlands and the Isle of Skye need more time and usually a hire car or a coach tour.
With about a week, a workable split is two or three nights in Edinburgh, one or two in Glasgow, then Inverness or Skye by hire car or tour. Leave slack for each transfer, because minor roads and ferry waits take longer than the map suggests, and book rooms early for summer, when the busiest areas fill quickly.
- Edinburgh: the old town, the castle and the Royal Mile.
- Glasgow: museums, music and a base before the Highlands.
- Inverness and the Isle of Skye: scenery, but plan driving and rooms ahead.
Can you drive in Scotland, and what should you know?
Drive on the left as in Thailand; speeds and distances are in miles. Visitors can drive on a valid full foreign licence for up to 12 months from entry. Many Highland roads are narrow with passing places. Glasgow, Edinburgh, Aberdeen and Dundee have Low Emission Zones enforced by number-plate cameras, so check your car before driving into them.
How is mobile signal in Scotland, and why does it matter?
Cities such as Edinburgh and Glasgow have good signal, but the Highlands, islands and some glens have gaps. Ofcom states that EE, Vodafone, Three and O2 have all completed their 3G switch-offs, so phones need 4G or 5G with VoLTE for calls. The emergency numbers are 999 and 112.
- Download offline maps for Highland and Skye routes while you are on hotel Wi-Fi.
- Keep train tickets, car-hire and accommodation bookings where you can open them offline.
- Keep your Thai SIM for bank OTPs with data roaming off, and check the eSIM's country list names the United Kingdom, as a Europe plan may not include it.
