Shenzhen Day Trip From Hong Kong: Choose a Crossing, Plan the Day, Pay and Stay Online
Shenzhen sits right across the border and works as a day trip, but you clear immigration twice and the data plan that worked in Hong Kong may not carry over.

Quick answer
- Thai citizens can enter mainland China under the mutual visa exemption for up to 30 days per entry, but you exit Hong Kong and clear mainland immigration separately.
- The three main routes are Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau/Futian and the High Speed Rail from West Kowloon; the first two connect straight to the Shenzhen Metro.
- A Hong Kong-only plan does not cover the mainland, and local mainland networks block Google and WhatsApp, so pick a plan that lists mainland China.
Entry to Shenzhen for Thai Travellers
Thailand and China have exempted each other's citizens from visas since 1 March 2024, allowing stays of up to 30 days per entry. Hong Kong and the mainland run separate immigration, so you clear Hong Kong exit control first and mainland entry control second, then reverse it on the way back.

Choosing a Crossing: Lo Wu, Lok Ma Chau or High Speed Rail
| Route | How it works | Onward in Shenzhen | Suits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Lo Wu (Luohu) | MTR East Rail line to Lo Wu, then walk through the border | Connects to Shenzhen Metro Line 1 | Central districts and shopping |
| Lok Ma Chau / Futian | East Rail to Lok Ma Chau, then cross to the Futian side | Connects to Metro Lines 4 and 10 | Futian and Huaqiangbei |
| High Speed Rail | From West Kowloon station to Shenzhen Futian or Shenzhen North | Book on the 12306 app or the MTR XRL site | Saving travel time |
Pros
- High Speed Rail is quick and runs direct from West Kowloon
- Immigration is handled at the station, with fewer transfers
- Good for a day when time is short
Cons
- You must book a ticket and check train times
- For Futian alone it may not beat the border routes by much
- West Kowloon station may not be close to your hotel

What to Do in One Day
- Futian: the new city centre, with malls, restaurants and several metro lines, a good base for the day
- Huaqiangbei: a huge electronics market district; gadget fans drop in, but compare goods and check warranties yourself
- OCT and Window of the World: a theme-park and cultural district with scaled replicas of world landmarks, suited to an afternoon
- Shekou and Sea World: a waterfront area of restaurants and cafes, pleasant in the evening
Do not stack too many districts: Shenzhen is large and the return crossing needs a buffer. Two districts that share a metro line make a calmer day.

A Sample Day
- 1Early morning: leave and crossReach the port before it fills up, clear Hong Kong then mainland immigration, and keep the passport in hand until you are through the gate.
- 2Mid-morning: first districtHead to Futian or Huaqiangbei depending on your crossing and browse before the crowds build.
- 3Midday: local lunchPick a mall restaurant with picture menus, where paying by app or QR code is straightforward.
- 4Afternoon: second districtTake the metro to OCT or Shekou for the waterfront or theme-park side, as you prefer.
- 5Late afternoon: head back earlyStart back before the evening rush and allow time for two immigration queues.

Paying on the Mainland
Many Shenzhen shops lean on Alipay and WeChat Pay, and foreign visitors can link a foreign credit card to these apps. The steps are in “Using a Credit Card in China and Linking a Card to Alipay or WeChat Pay”. Set it up in Hong Kong or at your hotel rather than at the till, and carry a little spare cash for places that take neither.
What Changes for Data at the Border
In Hong Kong, Google, WhatsApp, Instagram and YouTube work normally. Once you cross into the mainland, local networks block those services (the Great Firewall), and a Hong Kong-only plan does not cover that side at all.
Roaming eSIMs from overseas carriers usually route data outside the mainland, so those apps can still open, but it depends on the provider. Choose a plan that lists mainland China and check how it routes data. The details are in “China eSIM Without a VPN: How It Works and What to Check Before Buying”.
- Install the mainland-capable eSIM over Wi-Fi before leaving your Hong Kong hotel
- Turn on data roaming for that line, and keep the Thai SIM on for OTP texts
- Download an offline Shenzhen map and screenshot your train tickets
- If you rely on TikTok, read “How to use TikTok in China and Hong Kong when your eSIM will not open it”, since it may not open
If You Stay Longer
One day covers two districts and a lunch. If you plan to stay overnight or continue to Guangzhou, the longer plan is in “Guangzhou and Shenzhen Travel Guide: 3-4 Day Plan”, which covers lodging, travel between the cities and more sights.
FAQ
FAQ
Does my Hong Kong plan work in Shenzhen?+
Usually not. If the plan names only Hong Kong, read its country list for mainland China before you cross.
Which crossing is best for a first-timer?+
Lo Wu is close to the central districts and joins Metro Line 1, while Lok Ma Chau suits Futian or Huaqiangbei. Pick the one nearest your first stop.
Do I need a VPN?+
Not always. Some roaming eSIMs route data outside the mainland so Google opens, but it depends on the provider, so check before buying.
Is a same-day return realistic?+
Yes if you choose two districts and leave a buffer for the return crossing, but if you want markets and several meals, consider staying overnight.
