How to Get to Geibikei: Train, Bus, Car and Rail Passes
Geibikei is some distance from the shinkansen. You take the Ofunato Line from Ichinoseki, and with trains infrequent, timing matters.

Quick answer
- Take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Ichinoseki, then change to the JR Ofunato Line for Geibikei Station.
- Local trains are infrequent, so check both outbound and return times before planning.
- Times and fares change; check with JR East before buying tickets.
Getting to Geibikei has two clear parts. The first is the shinkansen to Ichinoseki, long and fast. The second is the Ofunato Line local train, short but slow, with few services. A common problem is planning only the shinkansen leg and then getting stuck on the local one. Working backwards from the last train out is the safest way to build the schedule.

The fastest route in short
- Tohoku Shinkansen to Ichinoseki Station
- Change to the JR Ofunato Line on the local platform
- Alight at Geibikei Station and go to the landing
From the station to the landing, the way depends on conditions, so check the route and any onward transport with the boat operator or the station before departure.
From Tokyo
From Tokyo or Ueno, take the Tohoku Shinkansen to Ichinoseki. Not every train stops there, so check the timetable. The shinkansen leg is roughly two and a half to a little over three hours, and the local train comes on top. For a same-day return, leave as early as possible and accept that time at Geibikei will be limited. A more comfortable way is to stay one night in Ichinoseki.

From Osaka and Kyoto
From Osaka or Kyoto it is very far for a trip whose main goal is Geibikei. Split it over two days, reaching Sendai or Tokyo on day one and Ichinoseki on day two. If you are folding it into a wider Tohoku trip, treat Geibikei as one stop, not a destination to reach in a single day.
From airports and nearby cities
Sendai Airport is the closest for international flights arriving in Tohoku. From the airport take the train into Sendai Station, then the shinkansen to Ichinoseki, which does not take long. Nearby places such as Hiraizumi and Morioka also connect to Ichinoseki by rail, so Geibikei fits easily into a two or three day plan.

Train, bus and rental car
| Option | Suits | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Ofunato Line train | Most visitors | Few trains; check the last one |
| Local bus or taxi | A supplement from the station | Routes and booking must be checked with operators |
| Rental car | Those wanting time flexibility | International permit needed; mind winter roads |
Renting a car in Ichinoseki is common. The upside is flexible timing and the ability to add other stops; the downside is cost and the stress of driving. If you have never driven in Japan, learn the basic rules first.
Tickets and passes
If you only visit Geibikei, single tickets for the shinkansen and local train may beat a pass. A Tohoku-covering pass pays off when you combine several cities, such as Sendai, Morioka and Hiraizumi. Pass prices, conditions and coverage change, so check with JR East and calculate from your real route.
Reading the timetable and handling disruptions
Local line timetables often differ between weekdays, weekends and holiday periods, so choose the date that matches your real travel day when you open the timetable, and save both outbound and return times on your phone. If only one train fits the boat time, treat it as your anchor and add roughly an hour of slack for queueing for boat tickets or eating.
In winter snow or frost can delay trains, and in wet seasons high water can stop boats, forcing sudden changes. Have a spare night or a free-cancellation policy, and know how you would get back to Ichinoseki if the next train falls through, for example by a local taxi, which may need to be called ahead because there are not many in rural areas.
Luggage and reservations
Geibikei Station is small, so do not drag a large suitcase along; leave it at Ichinoseki Station or your hotel. Many shinkansen services need seat reservations, and some large bags may need a reserved luggage space. For the boat ticket at the gorge, check whether you must book ahead or can buy on the day.
Checking the last train on your phone while on the boat or out walking is much easier with a stable connection. An eSIM for Japan is one option.
