What a year in Bahrain looks like

Bahrain is an island you can drive around in a day, so the season arrives everywhere at once. November to April is the weather that makes old forts, palm gardens and craft villages pleasant to walk. From May to October, Gulf humidity leaves the air heavy with almost no evening relief. The other rhythm that changes the island's character is the weekend: visitors cross the causeway in large numbers, and restaurants and the main roads are visibly busier than on a weekday.

The year, in windows

• November to December — The air loosens enough to be outside all day: the Manama souq comes alive in the evening, and the open-air archaeological sites can be walked without hurrying between patches of shade. Weekend visitors from across the causeway pick up noticeably in these weeks, so book a table for Friday and Saturday nights rather than turning up.
• January to February — The coolest stretch of the year, with sea wind that makes evenings genuinely jacket weather. The island's small allowance of rain mostly falls now, in occasional short bursts, and the cultivated western side looks briefly greener for it. Good weeks for cycling and for wandering the old villages on foot rather than driving between them.
• March to April — Still good weather, and the season of the island's annual motorsport weekend in spring, when the whole place fills and rooms become genuinely hard to find — check that year's calendar before committing to dates. Temperatures start climbing through April and dust winds blow through periodically, taking the edge off the light. Mornings remain the best part of the day.
• May to September — Being an island keeps humidity high the whole way through, and the night gives back very little of the day's heat. Life happens in malls, hotels and indoor pools, and outdoor plans survive only at first light. Most people here now are working or passing through. Rooms are at their easiest to get all year, which is the honest compensation.
• October — The month you can breathe again. The first half is still humid, but by the end of it an evening outside is comfortable, the sea is still warm for anything on the water, and the island has not yet filled up the way it does in winter. It is a relaxed stretch just ahead of the season proper.

The weeks to aim for

December to March gives the most for the trip: cool enough to walk a fort, an excavation site and the waterfront in one day. If your dates are flexible, avoid the weekends when causeway traffic peaks and see the popular places midweek instead — the island is a far more relaxed version of itself then. Anyone coming for the annual motorsport weekend should check that year's calendar and book early, because that week behaves nothing like the ones around it.

The weeks to avoid

June to September is when people feel they bought a ticket to sit in a room: humidity makes even short walks tiring, and most of what is worth seeing here is outdoors. If the dates are fixed, build the day around first light and after dark and give the middle to a museum or an indoor pool. The other case is the big spring event weekend — lovely weather, but tight rooms and traffic that slows across the whole island.

What the season does to a data plan

The island is small and well served by masts, so coverage is rarely the issue even out on the southern desert roads. What changes with the season is congestion: on winter weekends and during a major event week, the cells around the circuit and the restaurant districts slow in the hours when everyone arrives at once. Order your ride home before the crowd starts walking out, not after. In summer, more of your day runs on indoor Wi-Fi, but a phone left in a sunlit car throttles itself right when you need directions. On the causeway and in the queue at the crossing, a great many handsets share the same cells and speeds sag, so load whatever you need before you drive onto the bridge.
