Getting to Kurashiki from Okayama, Osaka, Tokyo and the Airports
How to reach Kurashiki by train via Okayama, with rough times from Tokyo and Osaka, bus and car options, and notes on passes.

Respuesta rápida
- Take the shinkansen to Okayama, then a train of about 15 to 20 minutes to Kurashiki.
- Kurashiki Station is not a shinkansen station, and Bikan needs no rental car.
- Check timetables and pass conditions with the operator before buying tickets.
The easiest way to reach Kurashiki is to take the shinkansen to Okayama and change to the Sanyo Line or related local train for Kurashiki Station, a ride of roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Kurashiki Station is not a shinkansen station; Shin-Kurashiki is a separate shinkansen stop located apart from the Bikan quarter and is not convenient for most visitors. A car is not recommended for the old quarter.

From Tokyo
From Tokyo, take the Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen to Okayama first, around 3.5 hours, then a local train to Kurashiki for another 15 to 20 minutes. The total distance is long enough that an early departure helps if you want an afternoon in Bikan, or you can stop at Kyoto or Nagoya on the way.

From Osaka and Kyoto
This is the popular route for Thai visitors. Shin-Osaka to Okayama takes roughly 45 to 60 minutes by shinkansen, then a train to Kurashiki, so a day trip is realistic. From Kyoto, use the same shinkansen line. If you stay overnight, a night in Kurashiki fits well before heading on to Hiroshima or Naoshima.
From airports and nearby cities
Okayama Momotaro Airport is the closest, but international flights change often, so check with the airline. Most visitors fly into Kansai and take trains to Shin-Osaka, then the shinkansen. From nearby cities such as Kojima, Takamatsu and Hiroshima, direct trains or a single change reach Kurashiki. Check the latest timetable before you go.

Train, bus and rental car
- Train: the main option, punctual, with a station close to the old quarter
- Long-distance bus: cheaper, but check the stop since it may be away from the main station
- Rental car: not advised for Bikan with limited parking and narrow streets; suited only to Washuzan or the countryside
Within Kurashiki, walking is the thing: Bikan is small enough to cover entirely on foot. To reach Kojima from Kurashiki, a Seto-Ohashi line train takes little time, though you should check the timetable for your time of day.
Passes and tickets
The short run between Okayama and Kurashiki rarely justifies a multi-day pass. If you are already moving between big cities by shinkansen, calculate from your whole itinerary whether a pass pays off. IC cards work on trains and city buses in many areas; check they cover the lines you will use.
A simple day-trip flow
- Leave Osaka or Kyoto in the morning and take the shinkansen to Okayama
- Change to the train for Kurashiki and leave bags at the station if needed
- Walk Bikan and eat lunch in the old town
- In the early evening, take the train back and connect to the shinkansen
Be careful with connection times at Okayama during rush hours: platforms are crowded and people with big bags can miss a train. Allow at least a dozen or so minutes for the change and check the platform in advance. Late-evening services may also be fewer, so check the last train before planning your return.
When changing at Okayama, data helps you check platforms, departure times and the walking map from Kurashiki Station to Bikan. An eSIM installed before the flight reduces confusion at a big station.
Luggage and reservations
If you drag a big bag, leave it in a station locker at Kurashiki or Okayama before exploring Bikan, as old-town streets are narrow and uneven. The Tokaido-Sanyo Shinkansen has an oversized-luggage rule that may require advance reservation; it can change, so check first. Reserved seats are better in festival periods and cherry-blossom season.
