Getting to Asahikawa from Sapporo, Tokyo and the Airports
Asahikawa has no shinkansen. This guide compares the Sapporo limited express, airports, buses and rental cars, with pass and snow tips.

En bref
- From Sapporo, a direct limited express reaches Asahikawa in roughly an hour and a half.
- There is no shinkansen to Asahikawa; fly and connect by train.
- Allow slack in winter because snow can cause delays.
Asahikawa sits in the centre of Hokkaido, north-east of Sapporo, and is the gateway to Biei, Furano and the Daisetsuzan mountains. The easiest way for most travellers is to fly into New Chitose Airport, take the train to Sapporo and then a limited express to Asahikawa, which takes a little over three hours in total from the airport. The other option is to fly directly into Asahikawa Airport.

The fastest way in short
- New Chitose Airport to Sapporo: rapid train, roughly forty minutes
- Sapporo to Asahikawa: JR Hokkaido limited express, roughly an hour and a half
- Alternative: Asahikawa Airport, with flights from Tokyo
- Long-distance bus Sapporo to Asahikawa, slower than the train
From Tokyo
There is no shinkansen to Asahikawa: the Hokkaido Shinkansen reaches only the southern part of the island, far from Asahikawa, so it is not a practical choice for most people. Fly from Haneda to New Chitose in roughly an hour and a half to two hours, then take the trains above, or fly Haneda directly to Asahikawa Airport if the airline operates on your dates. An airport bus takes roughly thirty to forty minutes into the city.

From Osaka and Kyoto
From Kansai, most people fly to New Chitose in about two hours and then take the trains to Asahikawa. An overland trip is not recommended because it is far too long and needs many changes. When booking, check your arrival time at New Chitose so you can catch the limited express you want to Asahikawa.
From airports and nearby cities
From Sapporo, limited express trains run directly to Asahikawa without a change, with frequent service in the daytime. Furano and Biei lie south of Asahikawa and are reached by the Furano Line, with extra sightseeing trains in some seasons. Other cities such as Otaru and Noboribetsu lie in different directions and are best reached via Sapporo.

Train vs bus vs rental car
| Option | Convient à | À surveiller |
|---|---|---|
| Limited express train | Fast and punctual in normal weather | Heavy snow can delay or stop trains |
| Long-distance bus | A backup when train seats are gone | Slower and exposed to traffic |
| Rental car | Freedom around Biei and Furano | Snowy winter roads; a valid licence is required |
Passes and related tickets
JR Hokkaido offers several passes, from whole-island to regional ones, but types, prices and conditions change often. Check with JR Hokkaido which passes are on sale and whether they cover your route. If you only do Sapporo to Asahikawa and back once, single tickets may work out better.
Luggage and reservations
Limited express trains have reserved and unreserved cars; reserve ahead on holidays and in autumn. Large bags go on the rack behind the seats or in the space at the end of the car, both limited. In winter, carry a small bag and forward the main one with Japan's luggage-forwarding services if you are travelling onward.
Once in Asahikawa, the station is the hub for trains and buses. Buses to Asahiyama Zoo leave from outside the station, and buses toward Biei, Furano and Asahidake also depart from the station area. Always note the last bus, since rural services are sparse and daylight ends early, especially in winter when it is dark by late afternoon.
Planning the travel day
If your flight lands at New Chitose in the afternoon or evening, consider a night in Sapporo before heading to Asahikawa, since three connections after a flight are tiring and risk missing the last train. If you arrive in the morning, a morning train to Asahikawa leaves time for Biei or the zoo that same day.
With several legs and weather affecting trains, an eSIM lets you check train status in real time and open maps in the countryside around Biei and Furano.
