How to Reach Otaru from New Chitose, Sapporo, Tokyo and Osaka

En bref

  • From New Chitose Airport, check whether a rapid service runs straight to Otaru or needs a change at Sapporo. Sapporo to Otaru takes roughly half an hour or a little more.
  • From Tokyo or Osaka, fly into New Chitose first and take the train, because the shinkansen does not yet reach Sapporo or Otaru.
  • A rental car suits the snow-free months and plans for Yoichi or Shakotan, while in winter the train is safer and more predictable for anyone unused to snowy roads.

The question of how to get to Otaru often starts from a map of Hokkaido that makes it look far, but Otaru is actually close to Sapporo, and Sapporo is the transport hub of the whole island. The right order is therefore to reach New Chitose Airport or Sapporo first, then take a JR train or bus on to Otaru. This article arranges routes by the starting points Thai travellers use most and says when a pass may make sense.

How to Reach Otaru from New Chitose, Sapporo, Tokyo and Osaka

The fastest ways en bref

  • New Chitose to Otaru: take JR from the airport station; some services run straight through, others need a change at Sapporo.
  • Sapporo to Otaru: take the JR Hakodate Line, roughly half an hour or a little more, or a bus on the same corridor.
  • Tokyo or Osaka to Otaru: fly to New Chitose, then take the train.

From Tokyo

From Tokyo most travellers fly to New Chitose Airport, a flight of roughly one and a half to two hours, then take the train on to Otaru. The Hokkaido Shinkansen currently reaches the south of the island, such as Shin-Hakodate-Hokuto, and does not yet run to Sapporo or Otaru; check JR Hokkaido for any extension. Anyone who does not want to fly would have to combine the shinkansen with several onward trains, which takes long and does not suit a short trip.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka and Kyoto, take a flight to New Chitose from Kansai Airport or Itami Airport, a flight of a little over two hours, then continue by train as from Tokyo. If you are staying in Kyoto, include the time to reach Kansai or Itami, because the total from hotel door to Otaru can fill most of a day. This is not a day-trip route from those two cities, so plan on a night in Hokkaido.

From the airport or nearby cities

At New Chitose Airport the train station is beneath the terminal, with rapid trains to Sapporo and Otaru; some services run straight through to Otaru without a change. Check the destination sign or a route-finder app. Those starting from Sapporo can board the JR Hakodate Line at Sapporo Station or use one of the buses that run between the two cities. From nearby towns such as Yoichi or Kiroro, look at the JR line that passes through Otaru directly.

Passes and tickets that matter

The passes people ask about include nationwide passes and JR's Hokkaido-only passes, but value depends on how many rail journeys you really make. Sapporo to Otaru is short, so on a single-town trip a pass rarely beats single tickets. Travellers who will continue by train to Hakodate, Asahikawa or other Hokkaido towns over several journeys may find one worthwhile. Calculate from your real plan and check prices and conditions on the JR Hokkaido site before buying, since passes change form and price over time.

Luggage and reservations

Rapid trains from the airport may have limited luggage space at busy times, so with large bags choose a less crowded service or consider forwarding luggage to your hotel. On trains, reserved and unreserved seating are offered on some lines and services, so check conditions with the operator. In the snow festival period or on long holidays, buy tickets or reserve ahead, since services can fill quickly.

While changing at the airport or in Sapporo, having data lets you open a route-finder app, check the platform and see the next service straight away. A Japan eSIM installed before the flight saves you from hunting for signs or Wi-Fi on arrival.

Fares, timetables, service frequency, pass conditions and car-rental rules change often. Before you travel, check JR Hokkaido, the bus companies, the rental-car company and general guidance from the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel.
