Where to Stay on Rishiri Island: Port Area, Budget Options, Families and Ryokan

En bref

  • If you do not drive or have little time, stay in Oshidomari near the port, restaurants and rental points.
  • For quiet and sunsets, stay in Kutsugata on the west side.
  • Lodgings are few and often include meals, so book ahead and confirm transfers directly with the host.

Rishiri has no hotel district of the kind you find in a resort town. Lodgings are scattered in small clusters in the villages along the loop road, so the real issue in choosing is distance and transport rather than luxury. Anyone without a car depends on the port and on lodging pick-ups, while people who drive or cycle have much more freedom. This guide moves from choosing an area to choosing a lodging type, and does not rank individual hotels.

Choosing an area quickly

Ask three questions. Will you drive or cycle? How many nights? Do you have an early ferry? If you will not drive, stay one night and have a morning ferry, choose Oshidomari. If you have several nights and a vehicle, the west side is a fine choice for sunset views.

Lodging near the port and bus stops

For people without a car, walking distance from the port is the most important criterion. If you would drag luggage far, ask whether the lodging collects guests; many on the island do meet the ferry, but you need to tell them your arrival sailing in advance. Check your return ferry against the lodging's check-out time as well.

Budget options

Budget choices are hostels and guesthouses, which often have shared rooms, and minshuku that do not include meals. They cost less and let you meet other hikers. The catch is that you must feed yourself while restaurants close early; stock up on snacks or prepared food from a shop near the port, and check whether the place is open all season.

Families and groups of four or five

Rooms for four or five people are limited because the lodgings are small. Ask for Japanese-style rooms with futons on tatami, which sleep several people more easily; a larger party may need two rooms. Tell the lodging children's ages and any dietary needs in advance, and book as early as you can, especially in summer.

Ryokan and rooms with hot baths

Many ryokan and minshuku serve local seafood for dinner, and the island has hot spring bathing facilities used by guests and day visitors, but some lodgings have only an ordinary heated bath rather than true onsen. Verify before booking, including any rules about tattoos.

How to choose and what to watch for

  1. Check which months the lodging is open, as many close in winter.
  2. Confirm port transfers, check-in times and meals directly with the lodging.
  3. Read the cancellation terms, because strong wind can stop ferries.
  4. Keep a spare night before any flight home.

A common mistake is booking a cheap lodging far from the port and paying for taxis every day, or booking the west side on the last night and missing an early ferry. Work out the real travel time from the lodging to Oshidomari port before you decide, and ask whether the lodging can keep your bags after check-out.

Around Japanese holidays and festival weeks, island lodgings fill faster than you might expect. Travelling outside those dates tends to give you a better choice of rooms, though actual prices must always be checked with the lodging.

When comparing options, make a simple three-column list of your own: distance from the port, meals included and cancellation terms. Then see which one fits best, without leaning on a single review's idea of the best.

Small lodgings can be slow to answer email and some take bookings by phone. Mobile data lets you check mail, translate and tell the host a new arrival time if the ferry slips. An eSIM set up before you leave is easier than looking for a SIM on the island.

Opening status, prices, check-in times and transfer conditions at lodgings can change. Check directly with the lodging, the ferry operator and the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel before you book.
