How to Get to Kouri Island: Train, Bus, Rental Car and Which Passes Apply

Kouri is among the most searched-for places in northern Okinawa for transport, but the answer is neither train nor boat. The only access is Kouri Bridge from Yagaji Island, which itself links to the main island by another bridge. Travel is therefore by driving, or by bus or tour that crosses the bridge. Before planning, understand that this is a considerable distance from Naha Airport.

The fastest way, in short

Rent a car at Naha Airport, drive the Okinawa Expressway to the Nago area, then take ordinary roads towards Nakijin, cross the Warumi Bridge to Yagaji Island and continue to Kouri Bridge. Estimated time is two hours or more, depending on morning and evening traffic around Naha and the tourist season. Allowing a buffer keeps the day relaxed.

From Tokyo

From Tokyo you fly to Naha, a flight of a little over three hours, then follow the route above. There is no sensible train or boat option for visitors. A morning flight can get you to Kouri by afternoon, a good time for photographs, but allow time to pick up the rental car.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka there are direct flights to Naha from Kansai Airport, while those starting in Kyoto first go to the airport by train or airport bus. When choosing an airport, weigh the time to reach it together with the flight schedule. Check current flights with the airline, and do not set the rental pickup too close to your landing time because flights can run late.

From the airport or nearby towns

From Naha Airport, if you do not drive, use a private transfer or a day tour that passes Churaumi Aquarium and Kouri. From Nago, which is closer, local buses run towards Nakijin and some services reach the island area. Check timetables and the last departure first so you are not stranded on the island or in a neighbouring town.

A JR Pass is of no use in Okinawa because the JR network does not extend here. Some bus operators sell multi-day tickets or bundles with admission, but prices and conditions change often, so check the operator's site before buying, and work out whether a ticket beats a rental car or tour for the number of people travelling.

Luggage and bookings

• Book the rental car early, especially in Japanese long holidays
• If using a tour, ask whether transfers and luggage storage are included
• Fuel up in Nago or Nakijin before crossing, as fuel stations on the island are few
• Check the weather, since strong wind or a typhoon may close the bridge

The first mistake is underestimating distance. On a map Kouri looks close to Churaumi Aquarium, but the real drive crosses two bridges and uses coastal roads with speed limits. The second is arriving around midday, when the sun is strong and parking is full, wasting time circling for a space. Aim for before ten in the morning or after mid-afternoon for a more comfortable visit.

Finally, do not ignore changeable weather. Strong wind or heavy rain makes crossing the bridge less comfortable and the bridge is sometimes closed temporarily. If your trip has only one day, prepare an indoor backup such as the aquarium or a nearby museum.
