How to get to Iya Valley from Okayama, Osaka, Kyoto, Tokyo and the airports

早わかり

  • The simplest way is the limited express on the Dosan Line from Okayama to Oboke, then a bus or taxi.
  • If you fly to Tokushima, continue by JR to Awa-Ikeda, or rent a car in a nearby city.
  • Buses into the valley are infrequent, so check timetables and plan your return in advance.

The route most people use is the JR Dosan Line from Okayama to Oboke Station or Awa-Ikeda Station, the gateways to the valley. There is no railway station inside the valley itself, because the line runs along the Yoshino River to the north of the area. That sets this trip apart from ordinary sightseeing destinations: there is always one more connection by bus or taxi, and you need to plan your return clearly before you set out.

From Tokyo

From Tokyo there are two main patterns. The first is the Tokaido-Sanyo shinkansen to Okayama, taking roughly three and a half hours, and then the Dosan Line limited express to Oboke or Awa-Ikeda. This is the most direct approach and avoids going via Takamatsu or Tokushima. The second is to fly from Haneda to Tokushima Awaodori Airport, go into Tokushima city, and then take the JR Tokushima Line to Awa-Ikeda. That can work if the airfare is better value, but it involves several connections. Either way, you will not arrive early in the morning if you leave Tokyo that same morning, so consider a night in Okayama or Kansai first.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka, Kyoto or Kobe, the usual method is the Sanyo shinkansen to Okayama, which does not take long from Kyoto or Osaka, and then a change to the Dosan Line limited express. Some limited expresses run through between Okayama and Kochi and stop at Oboke, so make sure the train you choose stops at the station you need. The alternative is a highway bus from Osaka or Kobe to Tokushima city, followed by the JR Tokushima Line to Awa-Ikeda. That suits travellers who want to cross the Akashi Kaikyo Bridge and see Awaji Island on the way, but the total time is longer.

From airports and nearby cities

If you fly into Kansai Airport, take a train or bus into Osaka first and then the shinkansen to Okayama; do not expect a direct shortcut from the airport. Takamatsu Airport on Shikoku links onward to Takamatsu city, from where you can take the Dosan Line toward Oboke, which suits a wider Shikoku trip. From Kochi you can also travel north on the Dosan Line to Oboke, which fits a route linking two prefectures.

When you are switching between trains, buses and taxis, having data on your phone reduces the risk of missing a key connection, because you can open maps, check timetables and translate signs on the spot. Download offline maps as well, since signal in the valley can drop out. An eSIM installed before departure works from the moment you reach the first station.

Train, bus or rental car

モード向いている方Limits
Train plus local busBudget travellers who do not driveFew bus runs; check the return time
Train plus taxiSmall groups wanting a half-day tripCosts more; book ahead
Rental carGroups of four or five, and those wanting several stopsNarrow roads, international permit needed, snow in winter

Taxis in rural areas are limited, so call or have your accommodation book one in advance and agree on the pick-up time for your return. Without a booking you may wait a long time at the station. For a rental car, be clear about where you collect and return it, since one-way returns may carry conditions or fees.

Passes and tickets

The Japan Rail Pass works on JR trains, including the Sanyo shinkansen and the Dosan Line, but check the type of train and seat reservation rules. Local buses in the valley and taxis are not covered. Regional tickets for Shikoku and the Okayama area are also sold to overseas visitors, but names, coverage and conditions change, so check the JR Shikoku and JR West websites before buying and compare them with the cost of individual tickets. A single trip from Okayama to Oboke may not justify buying a pass just for this journey.

Luggage and reservations

  • Leave large bags at a hotel in Okayama or Tokushima if you are visiting the valley as a day trip.
  • Lockers at small stations can be few or absent, so check before you travel.
  • Book taxis and accommodation ahead, especially in the autumn colour season and long holidays.
  • Allow at least half an hour before your return train, as buses out of the valley can run late.
Rail and bus timetables, last-run times, fares, pass conditions, road conditions and seasonal closures can change. Check directly with operators such as JR Shikoku, JR West and the local bus company, and use the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel for general information, before you travel.

よくある質問

The limited express to Oboke takes roughly one and a half to two hours, then a bus or taxi into the valley.

Which station should I use, Oboke or Awa-Ikeda?+

Oboke is close to the gorge and river activities. Awa-Ikeda is the larger town, with shops and lodging. Check the buses and taxis from each depending on where you want to go.

Are there buses into the valley every day?+

There are local buses but few runs, and timetables can vary by day. Check with the operator before planning.
