What Chengdu is like on a phone

Chengdu sits in a basin under low cloud for much of the year, so the sky is usually white rather than blue, which gives the place a still atmosphere and a slower pace than the eastern megacities. People come for the pandas, for food that does not compromise, and as a base before heading west into ground that climbs and keeps climbing. As in the rest of the country, a travel eSIM roams onto a local network here, and some overseas apps and websites may not work unless you have made your own arrangements beforehand.

There are two airports: Shuangliu (CTU), closer in, and Tianfu (TFU), further south and a noticeably longer trip to the centre. Check which one your flight uses before booking a pickup or a hotel, and turn the eSIM on in the cabin so registration is done before the border desk. Both connect to the metro, and the ride in is continuous — but save the address in Chinese in case you switch to a taxi.

The city is even and the metro works line by line. The restored old lanes and the park teahouses under big trees are fine; thick foliage slows nothing enough to matter. The clear change comes when you head west, where the ground lifts into hills and then mountains and the line becomes patchy, following valleys and villages and thinning as you climb. The panda centre on the edge of town works, but slows in the early-morning hour when everyone arrives at once.

What a day here costs in data

A day here runs about 800MB–1.2GB, below the eastern megacities because you spend more of it sitting than walking. Camera translation of menus gets heavy use, since so many dishes have names of their own. On a day heading west, budget battery rather than data: the handset searches for a signal repeatedly where masts are far apart, and that drains it noticeably faster than ordinary use.

• Chunxi Road — The central shopping district, busy all day; well served, though weekend evenings slow it the way they slow every big retail quarter, and the station-linked basement stays connected end to end.
• The wide and narrow lanes — Restored old lanes of shops and teahouses; generally fine, and on weekend afternoons crowded enough to slow your walking, so meet people at a lane entrance rather than pinning a spot in the middle.
• The Yulin blocks — Residential blocks of small bars and restaurants that locals actually use; connected throughout, quieter than the tourist quarters, and suited to an evening you want to spend sitting still.
• The new southern district — A new southern zone of offices, hotels and wide roads where points are further apart than the map suggests; check real travel times before fixing a meeting. Coverage is strong throughout.

Day trips out of the city

• The Leshan Buddha — About an hour south by high-speed train; on the cliff, where a narrow stair descends past the statue, the line softens and the queue is long on holidays. Buy or book entry beforehand and check the visiting conditions on the official notices, since they change from period to period.
• Dujiangyan and Mount Qingcheng — An ancient irrigation system and a sacred mountain, under an hour away on the interurban train; the foot of the mountain works while the climbing paths through dense forest break up. Download the trail map and note the return train times before you start up.
• Xiling snow mountain — High mountain country west of the city, with snow in winter; the higher you go the patchier it becomes, with long stretches of nothing. Trails and cable cars can close with conditions that change daily, so check the official notices before you set out in the morning.
