Guilin and Yangshuo: how they differ
Guilin (桂林) is the large city of Guangxi, with the airport, the high-speed rail stations and plenty of hotels. Yangshuo (阳朔) is a small riverside town roughly an hour or a little more south of Guilin, built for cycling, bamboo rafts and evening strolls. Most visitors use Guilin as the entry point and spend most of their nights in Yangshuo.
Li River cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo
The Li River cruise (漓江) is the headline experience. Boats leave from a pier on the outskirts of Guilin and finish at a pier near Yangshuo, passing cone-shaped limestone peaks the whole way. The stretch pictured on the old 20-yuan banknote is around Xingping (兴坪). Book through your hotel or an established operator, and check the current price, departure time and boarding pier on the official channel. Water level affects the route, so details can change by season.
Sights in Guilin itself
- Reed Flute Cave (芦笛岩): a limestone cave with coloured lighting, north of the city centre.
- Elephant Trunk Hill (象鼻山): a hill shaped like an elephant drinking from the river, right in the city by the Li River.
- Two Rivers and Four Lakes (两江四湖): an evening walk or boat ride past illuminated pagodas.
Yangshuo: bamboo rafts, cycling and West Street
The Yulong River (遇龙河) is quieter and suits a bamboo raft, poled by a local boatman. The countryside around Yangshuo is easy to explore by rented bicycle, passing paddy fields, old stone bridges and small villages, which fills a half day well. West Street (西街) is the pedestrian quarter packed with restaurants, bars and souvenir shops, and much of its character is the lively evening atmosphere.
Longji rice terraces day trip
The Longji Rice Terraces (龙脊梯田) lie in the mountains north of Guilin, roughly two hours or more by road each way, so start early. The look changes with the season: flooded fields reflect the sky around planting time, and the slopes turn golden near harvest. Pick a viewpoint that suits your time and legs, and confirm transport with your hotel or a tour operator.

Getting there and around by high-speed rail
Guilin has two main high-speed rail stations, Guilin North (桂林北) and Guilin West (桂林西), so check the station printed on your ticket. Trains link to Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other big cities. Book on the official 12306 app in English with your foreign passport, and carry the same passport on board. Arrive early for security screening. A few extras help the trip run smoothly. Yangshuo is crowded during Chinese public holidays such as Golden Week in early October, so book rooms and boats early. After heavy rain the river can rise enough to suspend boats, so keep a spare day and pack a light rain jacket, since weather changes quickly. Morning mist often wraps the limestone peaks, which looks beautiful but lowers visibility.

Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram and Gmail are usually not reachable on mainland Chinese networks or hotel Wi-Fi.
