한눈에 보기

  • Plan three to four days: two in the forest park, one at Tianmen Mountain and one for the glass bridge or Fenghuang.
  • Staying in Wulingyuan makes early park entry easy, while the city of Zhangjiajie is better for trains and restaurants.
  • Views change a lot with fog and rain, so keep a spare day and check the forecast before riding a cable car.

What Zhangjiajie is and how many days to stay

Zhangjiajie (张家界) is in Hunan province and contains the Wulingyuan (武陵源) scenic area, with thousands of tall sandstone pillars. Their look is why people often link the area to the floating mountains of the film Avatar.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (张家界国家森林公园) is the area most people picture. It has several zones, and you need to plan around the in-park shuttle buses and lifts.

  • Yuanjiajie (袁家界): the zone with the Avatar-style pillars, known as the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, plus several viewing trails.
  • Tianzi Mountain (天子山): broad summit viewpoints, often a little less crowded than some other zones.
  • Bailong Elevator (百龙天梯): an outdoor lift beside the cliff that saves a long climb. Queues can be long; check the current operating status before you go.
How park tickets generally work: an entry ticket often stays valid for a set number of days and does not always include cable cars, lifts or in-park buses. Check validity, advance reservation and inclusions on the official channel.

With limited time, treat the forest park as the core of the trip and Tianmen Mountain as the day that gives a different perspective: at Tianmen you look down on the city, while in the forest park you look up at the pillars.

  • Wear grippy trainers; there are many stairs and damp slopes.
  • Watch out for monkeys in the park; do not feed them and keep food packed away.
  • Carry water and a snack, as shops inside the park can be far apart.

Tianmen Mountain: cable car, glass skywalk and the 999 steps

Tianmen Mountain (天门山) is close to Zhangjiajie city and is reached by a very long cable car that passes over houses and hills. At the top are glass skywalks along the cliff and the steep staircase of 999 steps up to Tianmen Cave (天门洞).

Glass sections can close in bad weather, and you may be required to wear the shoe covers provided. Some sections may need reservations or have visitor limits. Check current rules with the official channel.

Grand Canyon glass bridge and Fenghuang ancient town

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge (张家界大峡谷玻璃桥) crosses a deep gorge, with other walkways and adventure activities in the area. If you are afraid of heights, think it through before going.

Fenghuang Ancient Town (凤凰古城), also in Hunan, is an old riverside town with stilt houses, lovely for an evening stroll. It takes a fair amount of travel time from Zhangjiajie, so check the route and times in a rail or bus app.

With limited time, pick just one of the glass bridge and Fenghuang. Fenghuang suits those who like old towns, while the glass bridge suits outdoor, active travellers.

Where to stay: Wulingyuan or the city

장점

  • Wulingyuan: near the park gates, easy early entry and scenic surroundings.

단점

  • City: a commute to the park each morning, but closer to the railway station with more restaurants.

Wherever you stay, the hotel will scan your passport at check-in to register you as a guest, which is normal. Book ahead around Chinese public holidays, because rooms in Wulingyuan are limited and fill up quickly.

Weather, fog and a 3 to 4 day plan

The mountains often get fog and rain. Light mist can make the pillars look beautiful and mysterious, but thick fog can block the views completely and cable cars may close. Bring a rain jacket and non-slip shoes.

  1. 1Day 1: arrive and settle inArrive in the city or Wulingyuan, rest and check the forecast.
  2. 2Day 2: forest park and YuanjiajieEnter early to see the pillars and main viewpoints.
  3. 3Day 3: Tianzi or TianmenChoose by weather; go to Tianmen on a clear day.
  4. 4Day 4: glass bridge or FenghuangUse it as a spare day or an extra sight as time allows.
Entry rules, park tickets, timed reservations and payment methods change. Last checked October 2026. Confirm with the Chinese embassy or consulate, the National Immigration Administration and the official park and cable car channels before you travel.

가는 방법과 연결 상태 유지

Book high-speed rail tickets through the 12306 app and carry the same passport you booked with. Signal can be weak at many mountain spots, so save maps, tickets and hotel details in advance. Foreign services such as Google, LINE, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, X, WhatsApp and Gmail are usually not reachable on mainland Chinese networks or hotel Wi-Fi. A travel eSIM from a non-Chinese provider usually routes data through a gateway outside the mainland, like roaming, which is why those apps usually open on it. Nobody can guarantee every app on every network, so test before relying on it, and keep your Thai SIM on for SMS and bank OTPs.
