How to Get to Arashiyama: Train, Bus, Car and Pass Options

한눈에 보기

  • From Kyoto Station, the JR Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama takes roughly 15 to 20 minutes.
  • From Osaka, use JR via Kyoto or Hankyu via Katsura.
  • Driving is not recommended; a JR pass covers only the Sagano Line.

The most direct way to Arashiyama is the JR Sagano Line from Kyoto Station to Saga-Arashiyama Station, roughly 15 to 20 minutes. Visitors from Osaka may prefer the Hankyu line via Katsura, and those staying around Shijo or Kawaramachi may find the Randen tram or Hankyu easier. Driving is not recommended because the roads are narrow, parking is hard and traffic is heavy in peak seasons. This guide compares each route by starting city and explains the relevant passes.

From Tokyo

From Tokyo, take the Tokaido shinkansen to Kyoto Station, a little over two hours depending on the train type, then transfer to the JR Sagano Line on a different platform at the same station. A same-day return from Tokyo is rarely worthwhile, so plan at least one night in Kyoto and treat Arashiyama as one day of the plan.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka, take the JR special rapid service to Kyoto Station, roughly half an hour, then the Sagano Line. If you stay around Umeda, the Hankyu line to Katsura followed by the Arashiyama branch can be easier when your hotel is near a Hankyu station. Within Kyoto, the Randen tram starts at Shijo-Omiya; it is a charming old line with a slow, scenic feel, but it is not as fast as JR, so choose it when atmosphere matters more than speed.

From airports and nearby cities

From Kansai Airport, take the Haruka limited express to Kyoto Station, roughly an hour and a quarter to an hour and a half, then the Sagano Line. With large suitcases, consider dropping them at your Kyoto hotel before heading to Arashiyama. From nearby cities such as Nara or Osaka, most routes pass through Kyoto Station or Katsura.

Changing between JR, Hankyu and Randen can confuse first-timers, so maps and timetables on your phone help a great deal, especially for checking which platform and which line you need before you board. Many travellers install an eSIM before flying so it works from the moment they land.

How to Get to Arashiyama: Train, Bus, Car and Pass Options

Train vs bus vs rental car

  • Train: the most reliable option, free of traffic jams, with several lines to choose from
  • Kyoto city bus: reaches many districts without a train change, but slower and often crowded in peak season
  • Rental car: not recommended for Arashiyama given narrow roads, limited parking and heavy traffic

Passes and tickets to consider

A nationwide JR pass works on the JR Sagano Line but does not cover Randen or Hankyu, which are private companies. Kyoto has several one-day tickets for buses and subways, but check whether your actual route lies within their coverage. If you visit Arashiyama on only one day, single tickets are often more economical. Conditions change, so confirm with the operators first.

Luggage and booking

Saga-Arashiyama Station has coin lockers, but in peak season they are often full early. A more reliable approach is to leave luggage at your Kyoto hotel or use Japan's luggage forwarding services, and travel with a small bag. The Tokaido shinkansen is worth reserving in long holidays and autumn colour season, while the Sagano Line, Hankyu and Randen do not need seat reservations.

A further caution is the similar station names. The area has JR Saga-Arashiyama, Randen Arashiyama and Hankyu Arashiyama stations, all in different spots and a fair distance apart. All three are walkable to the bamboo grove but at different distances. When planning the return, know in advance which station you will board from, because in peak-season evenings queues at the platforms can be long and the last train may leave earlier than you expect.

Timetables, fares, pass conditions and crowd levels can change. Check with the railway and bus operators, and use the Japan National Tourism Organization (japan.travel) for general information before buying tickets and before you travel.
