How to Get to Rishiri Island: Via Wakkanai by Ferry, Train and Plane
From Tokyo, Osaka or Sapporo, most routes to Rishiri end in Wakkanai and a ferry, or in some cases a flight to the island's own airport.

한눈에 보기
- The main route is to reach Wakkanai first and take the ferry to Oshidomari on the island.
- Some fly straight into Rishiri Airport when a flight operates that season; it saves time, but flights are limited.
- Ferry, flight, fare and pass terms change by season, so check with the operators.
Rishiri is far from the big cities, and neither trains nor a bridge reach it. That leaves two main ways: cross by ferry from Wakkanai, or fly into the island's airport. The ferry from Wakkanai to Oshidomari is the most-used route because flights are fewer. Your choice depends on where you start and the season.

The fastest route in summary
If a direct flight from Sapporo to Rishiri Airport operates that season, it is the quickest option. Otherwise it means flying to Wakkanai and taking the ferry, a crossing of roughly an hour and a half to two hours. Total time depends on your connections and flights, so build in slack.
From Tokyo
From Tokyo, most people fly Haneda to Wakkanai directly, or to Sapporo and then on to Rishiri Airport or Wakkanai. If connections do not fit, allow a night in Sapporo or Wakkanai. Flights and times depend on the season, so check with the airlines.

From Osaka and Kyoto
From Osaka (Kansai or Itami) you usually fly to Sapporo first, or via Tokyo, then on to Wakkanai or Rishiri. Kyoto has no airport of its own, so you go to Kansai or Itami first. The journey takes close to a full day and is more worthwhile as part of a longer Hokkaido trip.
From the airports and nearby cities
From Sapporo (New Chitose) there are express trains to Wakkanai, long-distance buses and connecting flights. The express train reaches Wakkanai Station, the northernmost terminus on Japan's rail network, in roughly five hours or more, and the port is a short walk or ride from the station. From Asahikawa you take the same line north.

Train vs bus vs rental car
| 옵션 | 적합한 경우 | 비고 |
|---|---|---|
| Express train | Those with time who like scenery | Long and with limited departures |
| Long-distance bus | Savers | Long; booking advised |
| Plane | Those short on time | Limited flights; wind and fog can delay them |
| Rental car | Those continuing around Hokkaido by car | Taking a car on the ferry needs a special booking; most rent again on the island |
Passes and tickets
The JR Hokkaido Rail Pass applies to JR Hokkaido trains, including the express service to Wakkanai (always verify the latest terms), but it does not cover the ferry across to Rishiri. Buy ferry tickets separately from the operator. If you ride the train just once, a pass may not pay off, so compare it with individual tickets.
Luggage and reservations
In summer, ferry seats and rooms sell out quickly, especially on holidays. Secure the lodging before buying tickets you cannot cancel. With large luggage, leave it in Wakkanai or at the lodging and bring a small bag across. Wind and fog can delay both boats and planes, so keep a spare day before your flight home.
If you want both Rishiri and Rebun, boats link the two islands but not every day or every season, so check the sailing times before you plan and do not book a flight home on the day you return to Wakkanai. Wind and fog delay boats more often than people expect.
Once in Wakkanai, the port is generally not far from the station and airport, but allow at least half an hour before departure for buying tickets and boarding. With a large group or lots of luggage, arrive earlier and check at the counter for any limits on bag size.
Vessels and services may differ by season, and some offer tatami-style cabin areas while others have only seats. Check luggage and bicycle conditions with the operator if you plan to bring your own bicycle.
Between trains, boats and planes, mobile data lets you check status in real time. An eSIM set up in advance means you can open maps and timetables the moment a sailing or flight changes.
