JR Kyushu Pass: Choosing Between North, South and All Kyushu

한눈에 보기

  • It comes in three areas: north, south and the whole island. Choose by the cities you will visit, not by trip length alone.
  • Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Beppu and Yufuin tend to sit in the north; Kagoshima and Kumamoto tend to sit in the south. Check the real map before buying.
  • Prices and terms can change; check JR Kyushu before buying.

The JR Kyushu Pass is a rail pass from JR Kyushu for foreign visitors, valid on JR trains on the island within the area you pick. Thai travellers going to Kyushu usually start in Fukuoka and continue to Nagasaki, Beppu, Kumamoto or Kagoshima. The common problem is confusion over which version to buy, because some cities fall in the north area, some in the south, and some in both.

한눈에 보기

North Kyushu suits trips centred on Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Beppu, Yufuin and nearby areas. South Kyushu suits trips centred on Kumamoto, Kagoshima and the south, while All Kyushu covers the whole island for people going far on both sides. The Kyushu Shinkansen from Hakata to Kumamoto takes roughly thirty to forty minutes, and from Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo roughly an hour and a half. The exact boundary of each version needs to be read from the latest JR Kyushu map.

Who each version suits

VersionTypical cities적합한 용도
North KyushuFukuoka, Nagasaki, Beppu, YufuinShort trips built on port city, onsen and food
South KyushuKumamoto, Kagoshima, IbusukiPeople drawn to Sakurajima volcano and the southern towns
All KyushuNearly the whole islandLonger trips looping north and south

Fukuoka is the main gateway for Thai travellers because of direct flights from Bangkok, so it is the start point for all three versions. Kumamoto sits near the middle, so check whether each version includes it before you decide.

Price and conditions

No price is given here because it can change; compare price and days on the JR Kyushu site. Check the number of consecutive days, which trains or seats are excluded (some special sightseeing trains need reservations and may carry extra conditions), and who is eligible to buy, which is usually limited to foreign visitors entering as temporary visitors.

How to buy or reserve

In general you can buy online in advance and exchange at a counter in a large station such as Hakata, or buy at the counter when you arrive; you must show your passport. Reserved seats for limited express and shinkansen trains can be arranged at the counter. In busy periods such as festivals and long holidays, reserve ahead.

Using it step by step

  1. 1List your cities firstWrite down cities you must see and those that are optional, then choose the pass area.
  2. 2Match against the coverage mapOpen the JR Kyushu map and see which zone each of your stations falls in.
  3. 3Exchange and reserve key legsExchange at Hakata or a big station and reserve the long legs, such as to Nagasaki or Kagoshima.
  4. 4Check frequency of local trainsSome rural lines run infrequently, so check departures before planning a stop.

In rural Kyushu and onsen towns, data helps with departures, sign translation and walking maps. An eSIM installed before the flight suits this kind of trip.

Sample routes

  • North, four days: Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Beppu, Yufuin, back to Fukuoka, mixing port city, onsen and mountain scenery.
  • South, four days: Fukuoka, Kumamoto, Kagoshima, Sakurajima for the volcano and castle town.
  • Whole island, seven days or more: loop north, then south through Kumamoto and Aso before returning to Fukuoka.
  • Base style: stay in Fukuoka and make day trips to Nagasaki or Beppu.

When it pays off and when it does not

The pass pays off when you change cities several times by JR and ride long limited express or shinkansen legs. If you stay in Fukuoka throughout and get around by subway and bus, a JR pass often does not pay off, since you barely use it. Trips that rely on a rental car or buses to sights off the rail network, such as parts of Aso, also use it little. Add up separate fares for your actual plan and compare with the pass price on the day you buy.

Prices, validity days, coverage, included trains and reservation rules can change. Before you travel, check the official JR Kyushu site and general guidance from the Japan National Tourism Organization at japan.travel.
