What a year in Qatar looks like

Qatar is a small peninsula you can cross in a couple of hours, so the season lands on every destination at more or less the same time. From November to March the breeze off the Gulf makes the corniche, the souq and a drive to the southern dunes workable all day. Between June and September, coastal humidity means the temperature reading only tells half the story: the air is heavy and the evening brings very little relief. Winter is also the season for international sport and conferences, which moves hotel pressure around week by week.

The year, in windows

• November to December — The weather turns liveable and the city moves back outdoors: waterfront terraces reopen, the old market is busy after dark, and the beach camps down south start taking overnight guests. The country's big event calendar is concentrated in these weeks, so hotel pressure in Doha follows the fixture list more than the season itself. Book around the dates rather than around the month.
• January to February — The coolest weeks of the year, and the ones when Qataris themselves camp in earnest — the southern beaches near the inland sea fill with tents every weekend. Nights are cold enough for a proper jacket. Occasional rain arrives in short bursts and makes roads briefly slippery where dust has built up. Visibility is at its clearest and the desert light is at its best for photographs.
• March to April — Still usable, but humidity starts to climb alongside the temperature. Dust winds pass through often in these weeks, turning the sky milky and erasing the Doha skyline for a whole day at a time. Morning drives into the desert remain comfortable, and there are fewer people about than in the depth of winter. By late April the middle of the day is no longer somewhere you linger.
• May to September — Humidity, not the number on the thermometer, is the real problem — you feel it in the thirty metres between a car and a doorway. Life shifts wholesale into malls, museums and cooled walkways, most desert camps close for the season, and outdoor plans survive only at first light. Visitors in these months are usually transiting or here for work. Hotels are at their most available all year.
• October — The month when the weather eases without high season arriving yet. By the end of it you can sit outside in the evening, the sea is still warm from summer, and desert camps and tours reopen one by one. It gives you the country in a calm version, before the event calendar starts filling rooms. Midday is still hot, so keep sightseeing to either end of the day.

The weeks to aim for

December to February is the easy answer: cool enough for a long evening on the corniche, a daytime run into the dunes and a night at a southern beach camp inside the same trip. If you want fewer people, late October or mid-March still lets you do nearly everything at either end of the day. Check the year's sport and conference calendar as well, because a week with a major fixture behaves very differently from the week beside it. The inland sea is worth timing for a clear, still day.

The weeks to avoid

July to September is where trips most often fall short of the plan: humidity shortens every outdoor stretch, and most desert camps are shut. If you must come then, decide in advance that it is an indoor trip, which Doha does well because the museums and malls sit close together. The other thing to watch is a winter week with a major international fixture — the weather is perfect, but rooms are tight and getting across town takes longer than the map suggests.

What the season does to a data plan

Doha's network is dense and fast, so the issue is never absence of signal but the number of handsets on one cell during an event week: around the stadiums and the conference centre, speeds drop noticeably in the hour crowds arrive and the hour they leave. If you need a car after a fixture, open the app and set your pick-up before everyone spills out at once. In winter, when the whole country drives south to camp, coverage thins across the dunes and around the inland sea until an online map stops being trustworthy — download the offline map and share your location with the group before you leave the tarmac. In summer, a phone that has been sitting in the sun inside a car will throttle itself, so keep it out of direct light while you drive, and expect more of your day to run on indoor Wi-Fi than on the network.
