Resposta rápida

  • From Tokyo the flight to Matsuyama Airport is fastest; by rail you take the shinkansen to Okayama and change to the Shiokaze limited express.
  • From Osaka and Kyoto, the usual way is the shinkansen to Okayama and then a limited express across the Seto Ohashi Bridge to Matsuyama.
  • From Matsuyama, take the Iyotetsu tram to Dogo Onsen. Timetables, fares and passes must be checked with the operators.

Dogo Onsen is a district of Matsuyama, the largest city in Ehime Prefecture on Shikoku, and it has no shinkansen station of its own. Every route starts with reaching Matsuyama and then taking a tram or taxi to the onsen district. The best option depends on where you start and how much time you have.

From Tokyo

From Tokyo the easiest choice is a domestic flight from Haneda Airport to Matsuyama Airport, roughly an hour and a half in the air, followed by an airport bus into the city. By rail you take the Tokaido and Sanyo shinkansen to Okayama and change to the JR Shikoku Shiokaze limited express for Matsuyama, which adds up to many hours. The train suits people who want to stop in cities on the way, and it is a poor fit if time is short.

From Osaka and Kyoto

From Osaka or Kyoto the shinkansen to Okayama is relatively quick, and there you change to the Shiokaze limited express, which crosses the Seto Inland Sea on the Seto Ohashi Bridge before running west to Matsuyama. Leave enough time for the change at Okayama, especially with a large suitcase. Long-distance buses also run from Osaka and Kyoto to Matsuyama, usually cheaper but slower, and flights to Matsuyama operate from Itami or Kansai depending on airline and season.

From the airport and nearby cities

Matsuyama Airport is a fair distance from the city centre. Airport buses run to JR Matsuyama Station and the centre, roughly 20 to 30 minutes, and taxis are an option for groups with heavy bags. From Hiroshima and nearby, ferries cross the Seto Inland Sea to a port near Matsuyama, a pleasant change from trains. From Takamatsu, JR limited expresses run straight through to Matsuyama.

Train, bus or rental car

  • Train: punctual and free of traffic, but a change at Okayama or Takamatsu is needed.
  • Long-distance bus: often cheaper, but slow and many hours seated.
  • Rental car: useful for exploring rural Shikoku, but inside Matsuyama and Dogo Onsen the tram is easier, and you need a licence valid in Japan.

Passes and tickets

The Japan Rail Pass covers JR trains, including JR Shikoku limited expresses, but it does not cover the Iyotetsu tram, which is a private operator. There are also passes focused on Shikoku, and they pay off only if you visit several cities on the island in a short time. If you only visit Matsuyama and Dogo Onsen, single tickets may be cheaper and simpler. Work it out from your real plan before buying any pass, because prices and conditions can change.

Luggage and reservations

Some limited expresses have reserved seats, and it is wise to reserve in advance around long holidays and weekends. Trams in Matsuyama are fairly small, so with large luggage consider forwarding bags to the hotel or taking a short taxi ride from the station to your lodging.

A common mistake is assuming Matsuyama is a quick hop from the main island and packing the travel day too tightly, even though the journey involves a change, a long bridge crossing and a final tram ride. Allow at least half a day for the transfer day, and avoid booking fixed-time activities on the same afternoon. Arriving relaxed matters more than saving an hour, because the onsen district is best enjoyed without watching the clock.

A day with several connections is much easier when you can check timetables and maps online. An eSIM installed before departure lets you open your apps the moment you land.

Timetables, fares and pass conditions can change. Check them directly with the operators, such as JR Shikoku, JR West, Iyotetsu and the bus companies, before travelling. General information is available at japan.travel.
