Getting to Yoshino: Kintetsu Trains, the Ropeway, Buses and Cars
Yoshino is reached by Kintetsu trains from Osaka, Kyoto and Nara, usually changing at Kashihara-jingumae, then by ropeway or on foot. This guide explains the main routes and how to choose.

Коротко
- Use Kintetsu trains, with a change at Kashihara-jingumae on most routes.
- From Yoshino Station, take the ropeway to the Yoshino-yama area, or walk up the slope.
- A rental car is not needed for cherry viewing, as traffic is often restricted and congested in bloom season.
The route to Yoshino is not as direct as the one to Nara, because it runs deep into the mountains of Nara Prefecture. The Kintetsu Yoshino Line is the backbone, and some limited express services run straight from Osaka, but many routes still need a change. Frequency is lower than on city lines, so check times in advance and settle your return time before climbing.

The quickest way: коротко
- From Osaka: Kintetsu from Abenobashi, direct or with a change at Kashihara-jingumae
- From Kyoto: the Kintetsu Kyoto and Kashihara lines, then the Yoshino Line
- From Nara: the Kashihara Line to Kashihara-jingumae, then the Yoshino Line
- From Yoshino Station: ropeway, or walk up the slope to Yoshino-yama
From Tokyo
From Tokyo there is no direct route to Yoshino. Take the Tokaido shinkansen to Kyoto or Shin-Osaka, which takes roughly two and a half to three hours depending on the service, then continue on Kintetsu or local trains. A same-day return from Tokyo is hard and not worth it. Base yourself in Kyoto, Osaka or Nara for at least a night first.

From Osaka and Kyoto
From Osaka, Kintetsu starts at Abenobashi in the Tennoji area. Some limited express services run straight to Yoshino Station, while others need a change at Kashihara-jingumae, roughly one and a half to two hours in total. From Kyoto, take the Kintetsu Kyoto Line, some services of which run through onto the Kashihara Line to Kashihara-jingumae, then change to the Yoshino Line. Use a train app to find a suitable service.
From the airports or nearby cities
From Kansai Airport, take the train or bus into Osaka, for example to the Tennoji area, then go to Abenobashi and board the Kintetsu train along the routes above. If you land in the afternoon, do not rush to Yoshino, since return trains may be limited. Sleep a night in Osaka first. Those staying in Nara or Kashihara have shorter trips.

Train, bus and rental car
| Вариант | Подходит для | Сильная сторона | Drawback |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kintetsu train | Almost every visitor | Punctual, no traffic | Infrequent, check return times |
| Ropeway | Children, older travellers, bags | Saves the first climb | Long queues in cherry season |
| Bus | Some stretches on the mountain | Cuts walking distance | Limited, seasonal timetable |
| Rental car | Outside cherry season | Flexible timing | Restrictions and congestion in bloom |
For cherry season, the train is the recommended option, as parking on the mountain is limited and the roads are narrow.
Passes and related tickets
Kintetsu offers several passes covering lines across the Kansai area. Some include the Yoshino Line and some do not, so check whether lines and limited express supplements are covered. A JR pass does not cover Kintetsu lines. If you only go to Yoshino once, ordinary tickets may be cheaper. Calculate from your real plan and check current conditions on the official site.
Luggage and booking
Some Kintetsu limited express types need an added express ticket, and some services may need seat reservations in cherry season. Check the train type before buying. Large bags do not suit the mountain, so leave them at the hotel or a locker in Osaka. Small stations may lack big lockers, and it is wise to carry yen in cash for the ropeway ticket.
Between changing trains and waiting for infrequent ones, having data lets you open train apps and maps at once. An eSIM installed before you leave spares you the hunt for wifi at small stations.
A common mistake is heading up the mountain without checking return trains, then finding the last one gone or facing a long wait at a small station. Another is assuming the Yoshino Line behaves like a city line near Osaka and setting off too late. Save the return train times on your phone before leaving the station, and allow at least half an hour to walk down the mountain.
