Wakkanai Itinerary: One to Seven Days Including Rishiri and Rebun

Wakkanai takes a long time to reach, so a good plan starts by deciding whether you are only passing through or continuing to an island. This guide orders days by route and says who each plan suits.

Wakkanai Itinerary: One to Seven Days Including Rishiri and Rebun

Коротко

  • Two days and one night covers the town and Cape Soya; add Rishiri or Rebun and plan on three to four days.
  • Base yourself near Wakkanai Station and the port, which are walkable to the market and the ferry terminal.
  • Keep a spare day for ferries and flights that can stop in bad weather, especially outside summer.

A workable Wakkanai itinerary has to think about travel time, because the town sits at the end of the island and is not somewhere you casually pass through. Once you arrive, the sights are scattered along the coast, and Rishiri and Rebun islands make up the other half of the experience. The plans below are therefore split into a shorter version and a version that includes the islands. Choose by the time you have rather than trying to fit everything in.

Before you start: where to stay and which pass

Stay near Wakkanai Station and the port, close to the market, the ferry terminal and the train station. If you want sunset views, Noshappu is an option but needs a vehicle. On passes, check whether your route uses long stretches of JR Hokkaido, since getting to Wakkanai tends to be long, and a JR pass may pay off only for certain patterns. Compare against individual tickets and flights before you buy. Island ferries are generally not included in rail passes.

Day 1: the town and the port

  1. Arrive at Wakkanai Station or the airport and leave your bags or check in.
  2. Walk to the North Breakwater Dome near the port.
  3. Lunch at the market by the port: a seafood or scallop bowl in season.
  4. Late afternoon: Wakkanai Park on the hill, then Noshappu for sunset.

Day 2: Cape Soya and Soya Hills

Day two heads along the coast east of the town. It is roughly half an hour's drive to Cape Soya, where you can photograph the monument marking the northernmost point. Then go up to Soya Hills, with its wind turbines and white road made of shell, and walk or cycle depending on the wind. If you do not drive, check local buses or a chartered taxi ahead and leave plenty of time for the return, because buses may be few.

Day 3 onward: depending on your days

Days three and four are for the islands. Rishiri is known for Mount Rishiri, which rises like a cone from the sea, and suits those who like scenery and hikes at different levels. Rebun is a long island known for flowers in early to mid summer and coastal walking trails. Ferries leave from Wakkanai Port and take roughly under two hours. Most people pick one island on a short trip, and with five to seven days you can do both. Always leave a spare day, because wind and swell can stop the ferries.

Since weather can change ferries and flights, mobile data to check the latest status is very useful. A Japan eSIM can be set up in advance.

Budget and transport costs

Most of the cost is getting to Wakkanai, which is far, followed by lodging and seafood. Adding an island brings ferry fares and island lodging, and a rental car or taxi to Cape Soya is another item. Budget travellers eat lunch sets, take a small room and visit only one island. Actual prices shift a lot by season, so check with the operators directly.

Adapting for families, older travellers and rainy days

  • Families with small children: use the two-day plan without islands, with rest breaks on drives.
  • Older travellers: use a chauffeured car or taxi, and pick an island you can see by vehicle without long walks.
  • Rainy or windy days: the port market, cafes and town hot springs, and push Cape Soya to a spare day.
Ferry schedules, flights, trains, buses, fares and opening hours can change. Check with the ferry operator, airlines, JR Hokkaido, each facility's site and the Japan National Tourism Organization (japan.travel) before you travel.
