Getting to Ouchijuku from Tokyo and Osaka: Rail, Bus and Car
No station in the village: the main route is shinkansen to Koriyama, then Aizu-Wakamatsu, the Aizu Railway and a bus.

The short answer for getting to Ouchijuku from Tokyo is the Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama, the Ban-etsu West Line to Aizu-Wakamatsu, the Aizu Railway to Yunokami-Onsen, and then a bus into the village. It takes roughly half a day with several changes, so staying a night in Aizu-Wakamatsu is wise when possible.

The fastest way in short
- Tokyo to Koriyama by shinkansen, roughly an hour and a half
- Koriyama to Aizu-Wakamatsu, roughly an hour or more
- Aizu-Wakamatsu to Yunokami-Onsen on the Aizu Railway
- Yunokami-Onsen to the village by local bus
From Tokyo
There are two main approaches. The first is the route above, which is fastest and easiest to follow. The second uses Tobu Railway from Asakusa toward Kinugawa-Onsen and then the Aizu Railway. It is slower and needs more changes, with through-running on some stretches depending on the real timetable, so it suits scenery lovers or those with a pass that covers it. Some operators also run long-distance buses between Tokyo and Aizu-Wakamatsu.
From Osaka and Kyoto
This is a long haul, generally six hours or more, taking the Tokaido Shinkansen to Tokyo and then the Tohoku Shinkansen to Koriyama. Most people break the trip with a night in Tokyo or Aizu-Wakamatsu, and a same-day round trip is not realistic.

From airports or nearby cities
Most foreign visitors arrive at a Tokyo airport and then head to Tokyo Station or another station with Tohoku Shinkansen service. Fukushima Airport has limited domestic routes but is not the main option for Thai travellers. Nearby cities such as Koriyama and Sendai are convenient transfer points.
Train vs bus vs rental car
| Seçenek | Güçlü yön | Drawback |
|---|---|---|
| Train and bus | No driving, easy-to-follow public system | Village buses are infrequent |
| Long-distance bus | Fewer changes | Slow and traffic-dependent |
| Rental car | Most flexible, easy to add stops | Hard snowy driving in winter; international permit needed |
Passes and related tickets
Options include the JR East Tohoku regional pass and a one-day ticket on the Aizu Railway, but they do not always pay off: for one long trip out and back, single tickets can be cheaper. Work it out from official prices and check whether a pass covers the Aizu Railway, which it sometimes does not.

Luggage and reservations
Large suitcases do not suit the small bus into the village. Leave them at the hotel in Aizu-Wakamatsu or in a station locker and carry only a daypack. Shinkansen offers reserved and unreserved seats; reserve ahead in winter and on holidays, and check the last bus time before you leave the station.
Winter and other seasonal issues
Aizu gets heavy snow in winter, and local trains and buses can run late or pause when it falls hard. Allow at least an hour or two of slack, and do not book a flight home on the same day. In the crowded autumn season, the village bus can fill so that you wait for the next one, while in some festival years extra departures are added, but you should check with the operator.
Timing a single day
If you must do it in one day from Aizu-Wakamatsu, take the earliest practical train so you reach the village before noon. Eat lunch and walk around within three to four hours, then head back on an early-afternoon bus. Avoid cutting it fine with an evening train, because the last bus may leave sooner than you expect.
With so many changes and seasonal timetables, an eSIM lets you check train and bus times live and open maps along the way.
SSS
How long from Tokyo to Ouchijuku?+
Roughly half a day, depending on changes and the bus; allow plenty of margin.
Can I do a day trip from Tokyo?+
In theory yes, but it is exhausting and leaves very little time in the village once you account for the changes; a night in Aizu-Wakamatsu is much more comfortable and gives you a margin if a train runs late.
Can I use a JR Pass?+
Some passes cover the shinkansen and JR lines, but the Aizu Railway is a separate company; check conditions with the operators.
Is a rental car a good idea?+
Good if you want multiple stops outside snow season, but you need a licence valid in Japan and should check the rules before travelling.
How do I get there from the airport?+
Go to Tokyo Station or another stop with Tohoku Shinkansen service, then follow the route above. Allow extra time on arrival day for immigration, luggage and moving between stations.
