Onna is a village on the west coast of Okinawa's main island, north of Yomitan and Chatan and before you reach Nago. The main route is Route 58, which runs parallel to the beach. Who it suits and how long to stay

Onna suits couples, families and groups of friends who want to relax by the sea and try water activities. If you prefer sightseeing in a city, with varied restaurants and museums, Naha is a better fit. Two or three nights is usually enough for a resort and the main spots. If you use it as a base for the north, for example the aquarium, three or four nights may suit.

Best months and weather

Okinawa is subtropical. The early-summer rainy season often brings long wet spells, and from late summer into autumn typhoons can cancel dive tours and flights. Spring and early summer before the rains are usually comfortable. In winter the water is too cool for many people and winds can be strong. There is no snow and no autumn leaf colour here. Okinawa's cherry blossoms open in winter, earlier than on the mainland, but the main viewing spots are elsewhere in the north.

Getting there and getting around

There is no train to Onna. From Naha Airport the hire car is the easiest option, going by expressway or Route 58, for a total journey of roughly an hour or more depending on traffic. Alternatives are the long-distance bus and resort shuttles. Taxis work but can be costly over a long distance. Inside the village the sights are spread out, so a car is advisable. The Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology, OIST, is located in Onna. It is a research university that is not usually open as a tourist sight, so check the conditions first. Zones worth knowing

The village divides simply into a southern resort zone near Maeda and Manzamo, a central zone with the farmers market and roadside restaurants, and a quieter northern zone toward Nago. The zone you choose affects how long it takes to reach the aquarium and other sights.
