What Pattaya is like on a phone

Pattaya is neither an island nor a capital: it is a large seaside city two hours down the road from Bangkok, so people arrive for a weekend, with the family, or tacked onto a conference. Because high-rise condos and hotels run the length of the bay, the network here is built out like a city's rather than a remote resort's. The interesting part is what happens when you take the boat out to Koh Larn, which you can see from the sand — conditions change the moment you are underway.

When you land

Most people come by road from Bangkok — minivans, coaches into the North Pattaya terminal, or a private car down the motorway — with service running almost the whole way. Flying in means U-Tapao (UTP), south of the city and much quieter, where you will want the line on before you leave the building because you are mostly arranging your own car. The entry point people forget is Bali Hai pier, for anyone crossing back from the island. Riding a songthaew along the beach road you keep service throughout, though speeds sag in the evening when the whole strip jams at once.

Where coverage changes

The Pattaya and Jomtien beachfronts are lined with towers, so the signal is strong with several masts in reach — although very high floors sometimes hop between them in a way that feels unsettled, noticeably more so than at ground level. On the hill road over Pratumnak between the two bays there are short stretches where the rise blocks things. Take the boat from Bali Hai to Koh Larn and the line weakens mid-crossing before sharpening again as you approach the pier by the island's village. The small beaches on the island's far side, facing open sea, behave differently from the ones facing the city.

What a day here costs in data

A day here runs about 800MB to 1.5GB, because people order cars several times over and open the map whenever they go looking for somewhere to eat. Shows, watersports and restaurants all get booked through an app from a beach chair. On a day you cross to the island and film, add extra, since the clips queue up and all upload at once when you are back on the mainland. Anyone here for a conference, tethering a laptop through the afternoon, will use several times what a sightseer does.

Districts travellers ask about

• Pattaya Beach Road — The city's main axis, hotels and shops without a gap; strong all day, though in the early evening when people and traffic peak together, getting an app to find you a car takes longer than usual.
• Jomtien — The long southern beach favoured by families and long-stayers; steadier than the north because the crowd is spread rather than clustered, and the beachfront places have open seating where working actually functions.
• Pratumnak hill — The rise between the two bays with its popular viewpoint; the open lookout itself is fine, but the road curling round the back of the hill has short stretches where the line drops abruptly.
• Naklua — The northernmost district, still a working fishing community with a fish market; ordinary residential coverage, and unlike the main strip it does not get crowded enough to slow down in the evening.

Day trips out of the city

• Koh Larn — A short ferry from Bali Hai; the line weakens mid-crossing, the village-side beaches work well, and the small coves on the far side facing open water are perceptibly thinner.
• Nong Nooch garden — Half an hour south into a very large garden estate; the flat, open ground means coverage everywhere, though in the densely planted sections it slows enough that uploading video feels sluggish.
• Koh Sichang — Drive north and sail from Sriracha pier to a far quieter island; the line cuts in and out mid-water, and ashore it works best on the side facing the mainland.
